stunning cowardice, hypocrisy, and disrespect for the membership! I, like hundreds of other members who voted in support of this resolution, sat on the ground outside the packed meeting hall (despite being 7 months pregnant and tired) to vote in-person against scholasticide.

Stunning cowardice by the AHA Council. For shame. "The Council considers the Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide in Gaza ... to contravene the Association’s Constitution and Bylaws because it lies outside the scope of the Association’s mission and purpose." https://t.co/fq4kS8nLhG

absolutely wild. further criminalizing people in public space + feeding false narratives about how nyc is crime city. Also, subway cops, like many current police practices, date back to the 1930s. For more about how 1930s shaped policing today read Gotham’s War within a War.

New: Gov. Hochul announces that she is deploying 750 National Guard members into the NYC subways to conduct bag checks, in addition to another 250 law enforcement members. She is also proposing a bill to ban people convicted of a violent crime on the subway from public transit

cannot stop reading @Liz_Hand 's incredible A Haunting on the Hill. Such an a wonderful reimagining of Jackson's themes and work. Who knew hares could be so ominous? Despite all the blood and hauntings I still kind of want to be at this artist's retreat. a great read from @nypl

In the 1930s Mayor LaGuardia argued more police meant that city gov was working for all + creating a safer city. He was wrong; the policies were grossly racist even in a period of generous social policy. With today's austerity these ideas are catastrophic

The mayor said that not only would there be no police hiring freeze, but that 600 recruits were on the way. Libraries still face budget reductions.

100%!! Programs, collections, maintenance etc all will suffer! not to mention all the other city agencies and programs (DOE, 3K, composting etc) that will all suffer under these unnecessary and dangerous cuts

FYI library budget cuts don’t just affect service hours! Usually if enough people request popular books like these, the system auto-purchases more copies. But because of Adams’ cuts, we can make fewer purchases, allow fewer requests, and avg wait times, already ~27 days, go up.

3/4 mass presence of NYPD in subway is misuse of city funding, but also issue of racial and economic justice, as @BaharOstadan shows in the excellent article because of huge increase in arrests for fare evasion and racial disparities in those arrests

2/4 many working people need to use libraries on weekends and for parents libraries are the only free warm place to take children on weekends. libraries are closing on weekends because those are most expensive days to staff so closing on a weekday does not save as much $.

few thoughts on responses to this 1/4 fact that some think state reimbursement of 60 mill of this 155 mill negates my point shows that many people have no idea how much larger nypd budget is compared to other agencies. just 20 million in cuts = devastating to city's libraries

this should be a career-ending scandal for Adams. He is currently gutting all essential services, which could easily be covered by a mere portion of these funs. Public libraries will likely now close Saturdays as well as Sunday, just for starters. https://t.co/rnK8USqIkR
