I'm excited to announce my new paper (@PeerJLife) describing the first evidence of sexual dimorphism in olfactory organs of #lanternfishes! Our findings add to the growing body of evidence for this trait in #deepsea fishes. https://t.co/dAi7DuJ6AV

.@Lampichthys, new professor @UNLincoln, tells us about light organs in the deep sea lanternfishes. Lovely histology of the photophore scales shows huge variation in the cup and the lens. In some cases the lens has different layers. Looking for grad students! #jmih23

Our latest paper is o-fishally out and it's on one of my favorite fishes, Pacific spiny lumpsuckers. For these fish, it pays to be bumpy! Armor is amazingly diverse in form and function. Our goal was to question the role of armor and hydrodynamics. https://t.co/RPpeO5lakI

Ever seen inside a ghost shark (chimaera) mouth? This is the mouth of a Spotted Ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei); looking down on the lower jaw. Note the (grey) tooth plates (hence the name "ratfish"). Behind a fleshy tongue-like unit, is a wonderful array of taste papilla! Wow!👻🦈

Dr. Jose Tavera, a @FulbrightPrgrm fellow in my lab, is scanning all the fishes of Colombia. We have a nice poster going, and every now and then there is a bonus. Here, a freshwater grunt (Rhonciscus bayanus) has eaten an entire fish. Perhaps a mullet.

I am trying to be ON TOP of things today, guys! First things first... The #SundayFishSketch #Fishytheme is 'fishes that make sounds.' Whether it be grunting, drumming, humming, or clicking... sketch those noisy fishes. #sciart #howisitfridayalready?
