Many people liked the decision. Some (especially Russian and Armenian) criticized it. Few even got personal with me. One thing I want to stress again. Sometimes there is no good decision. Dvorkovich's was probably the lesser evil. And it was made in a good faith. #ChessOlympiad

Vishy wins GCT Rapid leg in Warsaw with a round to spare. What a class. Sorry for being blunt, but in some games it felt like he was simply from a different league. Legends can get older, but in any given tournament they are capable of showing their peak strength.

Kudos to Magnus! In spite his great result, Norway lost nearly all chances to make it to podium, but he keeps on playing. Today his team is in the hall B, and the World Champion is there. I simply can't think of any other World Champion in the history who would act like that.

I was @ReheSamay when it happened. With all the sympathy towards Team Armenia, there was no other option. That's the price we pay for playing online - same thing happened to Team India before. I understand the frustration of players, but FIDE reviewed it objectively and fairly.

What an outstanding preparation by @viditchess - wow. I played Gruenfeld for many years, helped the very top players (including two World Champions) to analyse it, but I do not recall anything of the kind. Stunning. Check the game vs.MVL from round 9.

@ReheSamay does a great job to promote chess in India through streaming and attracting people to our game. We just had a call to exchange the ideas. FIDE sees India as an important strategic region with a lot of potential, and I expect Indian companies to seize the opportunity.

Leaving Tamil Nadu&India. It was an amazing time. Busy, intense, exhausting and recharging. Thanks to governments, AICF, people of TN. For us @FIDE_chess it was very important to deliver, and I feel proud for our team, even if lion's share of credit goes to locals. We'll be back!

Olympiad goes to Chennai, India! Exact dates to be published later this week. FIDE inspection plans its first trip to the venue already at the end of March. Kudos to @Bharatchess64 , AICF and Tamil Nadu government for submitting a solid bid at a very short notice.

Online Olympiad is still an Olympiad. And apart of a glory, two sets of golden medals and two sets of bronze are shipping off to players and captains. Took some time to design and mint, delayed due to covid, but soon to reach Russia, India, US and Poland. Kudos to the winners!

Kudos to Hikaru - game, pool and a spot in the Candidates - along with Richard Rapport. I vividly remember all this criticism at FIDE providing Hikaru with the wild-card for GP Series. Great to see former no.2 re-emerging as a really top player in after all not-so-boring classic.

Captain William Evans was born on this day in 1790. The most impactful sailor in history of chess, he invented the Gambit and used it to beat several leading masters of early 19th century. Later championed by Kasparov and other top players, Evans Gambit is still a moveable feast.

I'm genuinely happy for Vidit. Not only because he is a superb player and a nice guy. But largely because he pulled it at 29. SM are always after hype with a few top-rated + youngsters, and it impacts organizers - reducing opportunities for others. FIDE is happy to provide those!

Praising young genius is a common place, but I would like to single out Armenian GM Gabriel Sargissian, who turns 39 next week. He peaks at 2711.4 at the age where many people stop playing, and chess fans casually write off their heroes. Not in Gabriel's case. Bravo!

Djokovic says he won't retire as long as he is no.1, neither did Roger or anyone in male's tennis after Borg. Ours Fischer and Kasparov retired, while Magnus gave away the title. Why Nole/Roger/Rafa kept the motivation, and chess greats didn't? Mental fatigue vs the physical one?

That is big! @DGukesh becomes third youngest player in history to reach 2700. There are many wonderboys, few young stars but only exceptional ones cross the 2700-mark as teenagers. Taking into account the rating deflation, it is an outstanding achievement indeed. Way to go!

GM Michal Krasenkow played yesterday the best game of the World Cup so far, knocking out Kirill Alekseenko. It was beautiful and powerful. Almost nobody noticed. Sure, Michal is 58, he represents Poland, which is neither big nor tiny, who cares? For a chess's sake, have a look!

FIDE is very different today. We have built strong ties with many countries, federations, sponsors. It allows us to act swiftly, whether it is about moving World Rapid in two days or finding hosts for Olympiad promptly. Pandemic or a war -we will keep serving the chess community.
