Re:Zero Volume 5 โœ… Holy shit, this volume was dark. The final chapters were nothing but raw, unfiltered psychological horror. Petelgeuse's introduction is incredible and the amount of detail and brutality made the chapter feel even darker than the anime.

Arc 3 Chapter 5: Self-Proclaimed Knight, Natsuki Subaru โœ… This chapter is the culmination of Subaru's growing insecurity throughout the entire volume until it all explodes at once. We see as Subaru's flaws are truly exposed for the first time.๐Ÿงต

The novel also really makes it clear just how thoroughly Roswaal orchestrated all of Subaru's actions throughout the volume. And the Emilia camp's strategy using Subaru to demonstrate the strength of Roswaal and Puck was completely different from the anime.

The candidates' speeches go much more in depth compared to the anime. We see Crusch's unwillingness to rely on the dragon and Anastasia's emphasis on greed seems to parallel Echidna. We learn more of Al's origins of being a "Sword Slave" in the Vollachia Empire.

The anime adapts the entire volume into only 2 episodes compared to the usual 4 for the first 3 volumes so a lot is cut. Particularly with Priscilla's camp, we see a demonstration of her supernatural luck winning 7 coin tosses in a row and also learn Al is from another world.

Re:Zero Volume 4 โœ… Easily the best volume so far and so much better than the anime. It shocked me just how much was cut. The Royal Selection begins and there are so many layers of scheming and manipulation from several characters. Incredible introduction to Arc 3.

And for the first time, we finally see how empty Subaru truly is. He desperately lists all his achievements as a last resort to not be abandoned. To prove that he has value. That he serves any purpose. Because there's no reason for him to exist otherwise.

In the process, Subaru completely tramples on his relationship with Emilia. "Why do you keep trying to help me?" Subaru is unable to answer this question and instead reduces their relationship merely to a debt. One that will naturally end as soon as it is repaid.

When Emilia chooses to leave Subaru behind in the capital, to Subaru it is the same as invalidating all value he holds as a person. Faced with the possibility of losing his only reason to exist, the mask finally crumbles and Subaru's true self is exposed.

Subaru accepting the duel against Julius is a desperate attempt for revenge. To deny Julius' claims. To prove that despite knowing the gap between them, he could accomplish something if he tried. But even this fantasy is mercilessly crushed. "You are irredeemably powerless"

When Subaru feels inferior to the knights in the Royal Selection hall, he overcompensates yet again. And when Julius calls him out after declaring himself a knight, Subaru is unable to refute anything he says but refuses to accept it regardless.

The consequences of Subaru's suicide in arc 2 are also made immediately obvious. Subaru has internalized the fact that his own death can be used to help others. To Subaru, Return By Death is an ability only he possesses and consequently the one thing that gives him value.

When Subaru is told to stay behind, we see the extent of his toxic attachment to Emilia for the first time. Subaru begins to make helping Emilia his entire reason for existing. Tying his own self worth to that singular role as Emilia's savior.

His attempt to save Priscilla in the alleyway is only an attempt to escape from that reality. Yet even that ends in failure and he needs to be rescued by Old Man Rom. Every event in this the volume serves to highlight Subaru's powerlessness and worsen his feelings of inadequacy.

This is also leads to his hatred of Julius. The ideal picture of a knight and the embodiment of everything Subaru lacks. Seeing Julius converse with Emilia only highlights Subaru's shortcomings in comparison. Subaru's insecurity about his own masculinity also contributes to this.

In the very first scene of the volume, we can see that Subaru is dissatisfied with his accomplishments in Arc 2. Instead of acknowledging his achievements, he instead grows insecure for not having done more despite saving everyone. This marks the beginning of Subaru's downfall.
