Training GPT-3 would take 1,000 A100's about 34 days at 400W each for a total energy expense of 1 TJ. Training a human for 20 years at 2,000 calories per day works out to only 50 GJ or just 5% of the energy to train GPT-3.

Before generative AI we could convince ourselves that the only thing separating us from artists was the thousands of hours of technical skills training. Now we are confronted bluntly with our lack of creativity.

The same arguments get repeated over and over online like repeat performances of a play. Sometimes someone has an unusually witty line to dress up a tired old argument. Twitter is full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

What if we figure out how to make machines that can think. but it doesn't turn out to be economical to endow them with qualia. so we fill the universe with cold automatons. while the flame of consciousness dies out. .

Historically, the best way to get leverage on your effort was to multiply your capital via funding and then multiply your brains and brawn by managing employees. Going forward, you're going to get higher leverage by figuring out how to most effectively command our AI helpers.

Imagine how different the political valiance of AI disruption would have been if cab drivers had gotten disrupted before artists, as it looked like they would. Unclear whether paralegals or warehouse workers will come next so the political alignment is still up for grabs.

Public intellectuals are just entertainers like comedians but they make you say "hmm" instead "haha".

Americans discount the probability of another civil war because our school curriculum focuses so much on the American Civil War and our sides aren’t separated geographically this time. Looks much more like all the other civil wars in history.

Conceptual Gerrymandering - to intentionally combine dissimilar concepts together under one term in order to confuse our ability to reason about them separately. Also known as an Intentionally Leaky Abstraction.

1/ There are no other constitutional rights in substance without freedom to transact. Being meaning to write this for 6 months, but the Canadian response to the trucker protests is illustrating this so vividly, that today is the day.
