When Gandhiji was assassinated in 1948,I was a student in Govt Arts College,Kumbakonam. At Kadakklangudi street, the RSS volunteers disciples of Golwalker were distributing sweet peanuts and peppermints to young children to celebrate the occasion!

It is surprising that Bharati has nowhere mentioned Savarkar in his poems or prose works, although V.V.S. Iyer, (Bharati's mentor in a way) and Savarkar were close friends when they were in UK.Baraiti's silence in regard to Savarkar seems to be eloquent.

As my 90 minute play மழை premiered in Delhi in1969 to a typical Tamil audience used to 180 minute plays,as the final curtain came down I got up.A stern -looking lady asked 'Is it over'. 'Yes ' I said 'How do you know?'Because I wrote it' I said and left the Hall in a hurry.

I had a brahmin teacher in III form (now 8th class) who daily prayed for Hitler's victory as he called himself 'Aryan'and the DK movement called the Tamil brahmins were 'Aryans'.He fondly hoped that Hitler would accept him and provide him his own house!

When I was a kid brought up in a brahmin street i Kumbakonam, I have seen old brahmin grandmothers carrying their grandchildren to a Muslim fakir for treating snake-bite . He used to invoke the name of Allah and bless the child .Faith has no religious barriers.

Udayanithi Maran should not have commented on Hindi labourers like that. In the early fifties when I went to Delhi to teach most of the workers in road laying were from Tamilnadu! Insulting the proletariat like this is not in good taste!

Best translation in prose rendering of 'Kamba Ramyanam' in English, in my opinion is by a doctor and also an ex-minister in MGR's cabinet, H.V.Hande.Very faithful to the original and provides an extremely good and elegant reading! Dr, Hande is now 96+ and very active!

My Sahitya Academy award winning novel 'Kuruthipunal'(1977) has been translated in Telugu and published by it recently and the wrapper doesn't carry the original language of the novel or the name of the author I am not surprised. It is Sahitya Akademy.

Idli,Dosa, Vadai etc our breakfast items are not mentioned in 'Kamalambal Charithiram' (Rajam Iyer) one of the earliest three Tamil novels (19th century). The hero has as his breakfat ,' Thenkuzhal'. 'Cheedai' ,'Murukku' and 'Pittu'!

It is interesting though Saivism is claimed to be essentially the religion of the Tamil region the word 'Siva' is not found in the Sangam classics. But the words 'Mayavan'(Dark God) 'Nediyavan'(vamanavathar) referring to Vishnu are found in Sangam literature.

That Dr.Hande's mothertongue is Kannada doesn't surprise me. One of the best Tamil writers now is Dilipkumar whose mothertongue is Gujarati. He has also edited one of the best anthologies of contemporary Tamil short stories

Pammal Smbandam Mudaliar translated 'Hamlet' as 'Amaladhityan' showing as in the original the Queen committing adultery.The play failed as Tamil culture could not digest it.Later,he adapted it as 'Manohara' in which the King (man) committed adultery. It was a great success!

I have decided to have root canal procedure tomorrow after a long hesitation as I am told it would cause lot of pain after local anesthesia wears off. I am having it at Acharya Dental clinic. I request my friends to pray or wish for me that there will be only bearable pain.

Kumara Guruparar ,a Tamil saint and poet( 17th century CE) went to Mogul court and got grant and permission to build a saiva mutt in Kashi. He spoke with the King in his own language, maybe Hindustani. He has used two words 'Sabhash' and 'Salaam' in his poetry.

Hindi has officially 48 regional totally different variations according to the latest census and Hindi and Urdu have the same origin in Khairiboli spoken around Delhi region. Can anyone tell me which of them is my National Language to make me feel justifiably proud?

The National Book Trust celebrated its 100th book publication, inviting all the political VIPs including the Education Minister but didn't invite the author of the book! I was the author of the book! It happened in 1969.

Kamban was lucky. His 'Ramayanam; was not branded as a religious work and relegated to the 'puja' room like Valmiki's, which went a long way in getting it appreciated mainly as a literary master piece!
