. Dennis coming out our kitchen door in full dress uniform to present him with the Silver Star. Even in the midst of all that emotion, he instinctively raised his hand in salute as the medal was pinned onto his sweater (which is a breach of protocol, but we felt forgivable). .

That's my oldest brother Dennis, then a commander in the U.S.C.G. reserves, pinning a Silver Star on our father shortly after his 70th birthday about 27 years ago. He had earned the medal more than 40 years earlier in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, but had never received it.
