High-school snow-weenie Ed: Blockbuster snowstorm! Look at that 500mb! Post-BS Atmospheric Science Ed: Impressive 500mb look… but no Gulf moisture plume and poor low-level transport. Pretty ≠ snowy.

Yes, it can snow in the mid-40s. A freezing level near 2,000 ft tells you the warm layer is shallow. Quick snow bursts will be around through the afternoon. #pawx

Brace for a massive onslaught of East Coast winter-storm hype regarding late next week. Snowfall maps will be plentiful. Confidence will be abundant. Skill will be… pending. Hopefully I’m just hyping the hype. 🥴😅

30 YEARS AGO: When the Blizzard of January 6–8 1996 refused to end, something else began... a clarity about what I wanted to be when I grew up: a meteorologist! That storm lit the spark. I was in 3rd grade, watching the snow fall and fall.. until nearly 40" buried our cul-de-sac.

I'll say what many are thinking but won’t say. Model-derived snowfall maps are seductive. Lately, I’ve seen even degreed meteorologists default to them instead of forecasting. Too much time chasing long-range “signals,” not enough focus on physics. Models are guidance. That's it!

Sixteen years of broadcasting… and it took New Year’s Eve 2025 for me to finally say, “Yeah, let’s do the bow tie."

Snow squall moving through Millersville, PA during the 4 a.m. hour. Love to see it but take it slow if you have to travel the next few hours. #pawx #snow #snowsquall #weather @hbwx @MUweather @EdRussoWX

The threat of snow squalls will increase overnight. A quick coating to a half inch of snow is possible in some areas. May not seem like much but it will fall very fast in a very short amount of time. Threat is greatest 2 to 4 AM overnight across Central PA. Earlier NW, later SE.

This is what winter looks like for me... surfing the Great Lakes, America's 'Third Coast'. These are some cold surf sessions from Lake Erie and Lake Michigan over the years. Winter is surf season on the Great Lakes. Here's to more freshwater waves in 2026! ❄️🌊

Only Lake Superior can truly produce 30+ ft waves. The other Great Lakes are shallower and bathymetrically limited, and Lake Michigan is fetch-limited in westerly flow due to its N–S orientation. Superior isn’t just a name. Regardless, massive waves on all lakes tomorrow!

Wild weather on Monday! 40-50+ mph wind gusts over Central PA with temperatures crashing from the low 50s in the morning to low 30s during the afternoon. 60+ mph wind gusts likely in the mountains. Waves 20+ feet on Lake Erie! Windy weather continues into Tuesday.

Impressive temperature contrast! It's pushing 60 in southwest PA in the Pittsburgh area. Cold air damming playing out in classic form east of the Appalachians.

The worst icing may occur later tn as frzing rain becomes lighter. Light frzing rain freezes more efficiently. In contrast, heavier frzing rain runs off & releases more latent heat as droplets freeze on contact, slightly warming the near-sfc layer reducing icing efficiency. 🤯🤯

Winter storm on track. A coating to one inch of sleet for Central PA with up to 0.15" of freezing rain. Sidewalks are already very icy and untreated roads will turn into sheets of ice creating treacherous travel.

A good and seasoned forecaster consistently BEATS the model.
If anything what the last few days have revealed and exposed is even those who troll and harp on meteorology being better than models...it tells me it's all talk. The data shows warm and everyone posts warm. The data shows cold and everyone posts cold. You can talk all the

FRIDAY STORM 1ST CALL: This will be mostly sleet for Central PA. C-2" of snow/sleet and then up to 0.15" of ice. The worst travel will be Friday evening into Friday night. Plan accordingly! #pawx

Tightening pressure gradient over central and western PA Friday (packed isobars) enhances the low-level cold air bleed south into VA... a robust CAD signature. Snow at onset likely, followed by a transition to ice across central and eastern PA.

Twas the night before the DJI drone ban, and all through the skies… not a Mavic was flying, not even for sunrise. Pilots charged batteries like it might be their last flight, while the FCC deadline loomed on this festive night. 🎄🚁😅 https://t.co/VHcPqRlB5Z

Is DJI banned in the U.S.? No. You can still buy DJI drones that have already launched. Only new drones are impacted—get the details here.
