That said, there have been improvements in the form of decreases in certain transport-related air pollutant emissions. The big question is: What will future trends look like, and are we on track to meet our policy targets for 2030 and 2050?

Looking at the past 10–15 years, we see a mixed picture. In 2022, EU passenger transport activity had increased by 24.9% compared with 1995 and freight transport grew 44.6% over the same period. Transport accounted for 28.9% of EU-27 GHG emissions in 2022, up from 16.5% in 1990.
