After another very warm day today, it will be turning sharply colder.

We'll be taking a ride on the temperature roller coaster to end the year. Unseasonably warm temperatures continue through Sunday, but a cold front passage on Monday will bring highs only in the 30s for Tuesday.

The unseasonably warm conditions will continue through the weekend. A strong cold front will move through the region late Sunday night and Monday morning producing widespread rain and much colder temperatures.

The high temperatures across the region Christmas Day will likely be within the top 10 warmest on record.

Temperatures are expected to trend near 20 degrees above normal by Christmas Day this coming week. Near record highs are possible on the 25th. In other words, we can say with the utmost confidence, that there won't be a white Christmas for us this year.

Finally out of the cold pattern, we will have a warm Thursday this week, with scattered showers around during the day, and a line of showers with a chance for breezy winds Thursday night. Mountains will see strong gusty winds during the day.

The return of warm weather will present the next bout of wind and rain on Thursday. Mountains and wind prone locations just west of the mountains are increasingly likely to see gusts greater than 40 mph Thursday evening and night.

Cold Weather Advisories were issued earlier today with higher elevation locations seeing these conditions start Sunday morning before they spread area-wide Sunday evening. Wind chills are expected to be around or below 0° with values of -10° to -15° in the higher elevations.

Very cold wind chills are expected Sunday and Sunday night behind an arctic-like cold front.

Band of snow moving across the northern Plateau, northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. Greatest accumulations of 1 to 3 inches will occur across southwest Virginia. Dusting to 1/2 inch across the northern Plateau and northeast Tennessee up to 1 inch near VA/KY state line.

Here's a probabilistic look at tonight's snow accumulations. The northeastern two-thirds of the forecast area is generally expected to see at least one inch of snow. Widespread accumulations above four inches are not likely, but locally higher totals cannot be ruled out. #KYwx

Scattered snow showers continue this morning across SW VA and NE TN. Additional accumulations are possible, mainly above 2500 ft elevation. Roads may be slick for the morning commute in parts of SW VA and the East TN mountains.
