DPS spelling bee champ Frank Dumas received quite the surprise this morning when Dr. Pascal Mubenga, Superintendent, showed up at Bethesda Elementary to present him with a bike for his hard work! Frank will participate in the national Scripps spelling bee on June 2.

Due to continuing hazardous road conditions in parts of Durham County and the possibility of refreezing, Durham Public Schools will be closed to students on Friday, Jan. 5. It will be a teacher workday. Makeup days for this week’s weather closures are Jan. 16 and Feb. 19.
Due to forecasts of snow, DPS will be closed to students on Wed., Jan. 17. It will be a teacher workday; employees should follow inclement weather procedures. Dr. Mubenga’s Town Hall meeting tonight at Hillside High & tonight’s Winter Graduation REHEARSAL will go on as scheduled.
Although the winter storm track is unclear at this point, to avoid the possibility of students and staff being caught in bad weather on the road all schools will dismiss one hour early today. This applies to students and staff. After-school and evening activities are canceled.

Due to the extreme cold tonight and tomorrow after a winter break of buses being idle and buildings being vacant, DPS will operate on a two-hour delay tomorrow, Jan. 2. Staff are to report to work at the regular time.
President Biden honored 40 outstanding community leaders, including Turquoise Parker from Lakewood Elementary, with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award and medallion, recognizing their exceptional leadership and volunteer contributions.

Forty community leaders, including Hillside High School's Dr. William Logan, received President Biden's Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award and medallion, celebrating their leadership and volunteer work. Dr. Logan is DPS' 2023-2023 Principal of the Year.
While conditions have improved, secondary roads are still too dangerous to allow for safe travel to schools tomorrow with enough time for a meaningful instructional day. DPS will be closed to students Fri., Jan. 19; standard inclement weather procedures apply for employees.
Dr. William Logan, a 25-year educator who has served for a decade as principal of Hillside High, has been named DPS 2023 Principal of the Year. Logan is a transformational leader who has led the school to new heights from its annual scholarship sweeps to attendance and the arts.

Durham Public Schools is saddened to learn of the passing of André Leon Talley. The fashion industry trailblazer and icon was a Durham native and Hillside High alum. A screening of his documentary, "The Gospel According to André", was hosted at Hillside in 2019.
