The tenements on the north side from Albert St to Erskine St were known as Ellen Place and owned by the Baxter brothers. They were also known as Baxter Lands. Allegedly this was an experiment at building workers houses but high costs led to rents too high for most workers. 3/4.

The extension to Dens Road, over the Dens burn came in the early 20th century and this section of the road was known as West Lyon Street. However the West has since been dropped. 2/4.

Street of the Week: Lyon Street . Lyon Street was originally only built from Albert Street to Brown Constable Street. The layout of the road is shown in the 1857 Dundee Town Plan but there is no name for the street. The name appears in newspapers from the following year. 1/4

Back in April we shared a 1925 feuing plan which was part of the Linlathen Estate purchased by the Council in 1920. It showed Mains Loan to Forfar Road. This one shows Martin Street to MacNab Street. Names of property owners and developers are shown. #ThrowbackThursday

Here are some buses ready to take home the pupil's of Harris Academy. They are lined up on Perth Road, with the gate to the Western Cemetery on the right and the Lodge house of West Park house. Tram cables can also be seen overhead. Ref: TC/En/105/31 . #TransportTuesday

Close behind Tenements on East Side of the Greenmarket, looking south (now the lower end of Crichton Street). These buildings were demolished in 1914 to make way for the building of the City Hall, later officially named the Caird Hall. Date: c.1910. Ref: TC/EN/CHA/39

At the top of the street on Fyffe Street was Polepark Works. In the picture on the left was a Grocers, at this time ran by Mr Butchart. 3/3.

He had sold the land for development in 1829, but the street wasn’t laid out for another 40 years. It was developed by a Mr Robert Blackadder. The street was in the middle of an area of known as Pole Park and ran from Milnbank Road to Fyffe Street. 2/3.

Street of the Week: Lawrence Street 🧵. This street was laid out in 1870 and buildings here are shown on the 1870 map of Dundee. The land was part of the Wallace Craigie estate which had been owned by Laurence Brown Constable. 1/3
