It will speak both to the ways in which slavery, conflict, and capitalism were intertwined, and to the ways in which established interests fought to maintain the status quo in the face of economic and moral imperatives—issues with great relevance to our contemporary moment.

The book will examine how merchants in Bristol worked alongside others within the trading community to uphold the system of plantation slavery and protect the trade in sugar from a series of compounding crises towards the end of the Eighteenth Century.
