What lessons does psychiatry teach psychiatrists for life?. I have learnt not to take my sanity for granted. When I see a person going through an episode of mental illness I think any day that could be me. I can reduce the chances but not nullify it. Grateful for every morning.

The art of good psychiatric history taking is to encourage the story from the beginning. It can be done faster with encouragement, a gentle nudge. Why? When? What happened? How? Shifting from symptoms to story is a journey but empathic curiosity can encourage it.
When it comes to interviewing new psychiatric patients in my clinic, I am fascinated by how some people are very focused on their symptoms (depression, anxiety, panic, irritability, mood swings, inattention…) and some people are very focused on their stories (‘I went through.

One of my first MRCPsych course days were with you Seamus. Will always remember you as my College Tutor in Ayrshire. Cannot believe it has been 20 years since I started off in psychiatry in the UK. Thanks for all your support and encouragement in those early days.
Lovely way to finish up 20+ years of Postgraduate Medical Education. Time to pass the baton on to the next generation of Psychiatry educators.

Denying the existence of mental illnesses in an effort to 'normalise'- denies evidence, available treatments, and support. We can swing between extremes. Medicalising every low day to denying the existence of clinical depression. Neither extreme helps. We need to keep a balance.
Any stories of mental illness that help others feel ‘me, too’ are of great value, especially in current frenzy of mental illness denial and pill-shaming. Mental illness is a lonely road.
