The impact of logging / output can't be underestimated. For weeks I had strange RMT problems I couldn't explain. The reason was logging. I have a buffered logger now (pushes into PSRAM) and an idle priority task that flushes the logs to stdout, and -- voilá -- no more problems!.

The more I'm developing with the ESP32S3, the more I'm impressed with the peripherals and the CPU efficiency of the two cores. Frankly, for my projects I don't need a faster CPU in a successor. I just wish for more RAM and the reintroduction of RMII. Ok, perhaps some more GPIOs.

Finally a working SENT (SAE J2716) I/O routine that receives protocol frames and writes (modified) protocol frames using two RMT channels. Takes about 5% of CPU time (most of it for computing the CRCs). Now let's see whether we can handle another I/O pair in parallel.
