Clinical psychologist @Stanford researching digital interventions for improving health behaviors and treating obesity. Duke alum.
Palo Alto, CA
Joined February 2012
I’m excited to get started on my K23 career development award funded by @NIDDKgov. My project will optimize a #DigitalHealth intervention for obesity. I’ll get trained in 1⃣ the #MOST framework + factorial designs, 2⃣ #qualitative methods, & 3⃣ #retention strategies.

Loved talking about optimizing behavioral interventions today with @BehavioralMed members. Many great ideas for deciding which intervention components to keep or drop, and effective ways to present results from factorial trials 📊. Thanks for inviting me, @OBBI_SIG!

It was so nice to have an encouraging audience. Thank you all for your smiles and head nods. Next time, I'll have a backup and a backup to the backup 🙃 Sneak peak, below:
Doing a fabulous job giving a presentation about calorie information availability WITHOUT slides due to tech failure! Go @DrMichelePatel @BehavioralMed #SBM2023!

There were several exploratory outcomes. I particularly enjoy waterfall plots to see the variability in weight loss outcomes. Also looked at change in: 👟physical activity (Fitbit steps; GLTEQ) 🍎caloric intake (ASA24) 🫂many psychosocial variables (see Appendix 2)

This study focused on feasibility (retention, engagement) & acceptability outcomes. It was a fully remote trial. The intervention + assessments + study procedures were done remotely using tools like Zoom, Calendly, REDCap, Fitbit, Fitabase, and Box.

How often do people track their food intake if they're asked to track: all foods vs. only less nutritious foods? New pilot study published in @JMIR_Formative (open access): https://t.co/j2RVghVkjf

So grateful to receive funding from the Stanford Diabetes Research Center! I’ll be able to examine the feasibility and acceptability of different types of goals in a digital weight loss intervention.

Duke is getting the cream of the crop for its next Dean. So proud of my PhD advisor, @drgarybennett, for continuing to impress all and forge a unique path. #GoDuke
I am positively thrilled to partner with colleagues as Trinity's next dean! #goduke

Plus: The Multiphase Optimization Strategy (#MOST) framework is helpful for thinking about how to gradually build and refine a behavioral intervention over time, with the first phase of MOST focusing on preliminary studies.

Pilot studies “can identify potential weaknesses early in the lifecycle of an intervention & can help avoid failures in larger-scale trials. Failing & discovering on a smaller scale..accelerates the pace for discovering more efficient, effective, & enduring behavior intervention”
Making the case increasing funds for preliminary studies is essential and can accelerate advancements in the behavioral sciences https://t.co/L3CmvSCDoI

🚩A helpful resource for planning your next clinical trial. “What if sufficient power is not possible? Do not initiate miniature versions of larger, proposed full-scale randomized trials...These effect sizes…are more likely to be extreme (high or low) and unstable."
Do you work with trainees or collaborators who may be in the dark about the importance of statistical power? A new and fun analogy illuminates what they need to know! @BaiocchiMike

Should you use an app for weight loss? Listen to @drgarybennett (psychologist, intervention scientist) chat about the digital health space and what ✨key✨ features are needed for impact.
