The most frequently reported barrier to this approach for administrators however, identified by 3/4 of them, was competing demands placed on their time by other administrative duties

Left unrecognized and untreated, educators affected by trauma can suffer a range of difficulties including burnout, which was reported as a major barrier in more fully practicing a trauma-sensitive approach

The impact of trauma often goes beyond the individual student and is complicated by the fact that it is not just students who experience trauma. A number of educators have experienced trauma themselves, both in their personal lives as well as on the job

However, administrators were also generally unsatisfied with their school’s ability to practice from a trauma-sensitive approach and would like to see more support for their staff

Administrators also showed concern about the prevalence of trauma in their students as well as its impact on school success and were strongly in favour of adopting a trauma-sensitive approach in education

Many administrators rated highly the impact of trauma on student behaviour, students' academic performance, and their attendance or overall attitude toward school

The COVID-19 pandemic has provided unprecedented evidence that school is vital to the well-being of students. Administrator estimates on the prevalence of student trauma grew significantly when they were asked to consider students within the context of the pandemic
