It is easy to see why Vicksburg, on the Mississippi River, was such a critical location during the civil war in the United States when you visit the city in person as Naomi and I did today. The city has natural high ridges around it which give those defending it an big advantage

In Manheim, Pennsylvania today. They have turned what was essentially a straight drainage ditch into a meandering stream with enhanced riparian habitat to provide a wildlife corridor and better flood protection. The stream is the Rife Run in the Susquehanna watershed.
