Our hope is that policymakers engage constructively with this response as part of a wider conversation from parties critiquing the Cass Review to ensure that the best possible care is provided in the new service for gender diverse and gender questioning children and young people.

It is important to bear in mind that while we focus largely on the practical aspects of the recommendations, concerns about the bias demonstrated in the narrative text of the review should not be overlooked. How this bias might colour implementation is yet to be seen.

Our critique has been undertaken on the premise that the Cass Review is going to be implemented in some form. With that in mind, we have assessed the review’s recommendations and added commentary on what can be done to ensure implementation is to the betterment of service users.

To be honest, for a profession who typically pride ourselves on logic and capacity for appraisal of evidence, it is honestly beneath us to be whipped up in to a furore over unverified anecdotes that simply do not add up.

While perhaps a student AA was involved, their role - if any - seems distinctly overstated. With the information available, it’s quite impossible to tell what their role was. If left without a nurse/ODP, that is far below national standards and nothing to do with the student.

Secondly, it would be highly unusual for a child to be left unattended without an experienced anaesthetic nurse/ODP, whose first actions in an acute scenario such as this would be to get help, notable a consultant anaesthetist.
