Went straight to the comments ready to have this ruined by "this is ai" or "that elk is in peril it must think the red ball is [whatever]" but no! Just a wholesome video! (OK I do see that now I'm ASKING for someone to ruin it but you could also not)

In 2021, Rebecah Troutman — at the time Holden Arboretum’s natural areas biologist — was making her rounds and came across an insect she hadn’t seen

Sometimes a really, really exciting research question is a little deflating when you get the results. But alas, such is science! It's still a very cool discovery and encouraging to know *something* is eating garlic mustard (not even the deer will touch it). 5/

The team also launched a #CitizenScience effort to find out how widespread the aphid already is: Of the 1,300 observations sent in, over 200 found the aphid, with sightings as far west as Nebraska. It seems that wherever garlic mustard lives, the aphid likely already lives. 4/

It's better than nothing, though: Plants with aphids were around 40% smaller in mass and 20% shorter, and importantly had 40% fewer seeds per pod. Further study will be needed to confirm whether this slows down the plant's spread. 3/

I have been eagerly waiting for the results of her & Katie Stuble's experiment at @HFandG to quantify how much the bugs are actually affecting the invasive plants. Will this European bug rid us of garlic mustard one day?? Spoiler: No, probably not. Darn. 2/

A couple years ago, my colleague Rebecah Troutman found an aphid munching on garlic mustard that turned out to be the first documented sighting of the insect *ever* in the U.S. (I admit I'm a little jealous, that's so cool!!) 1/

And this fall, I do encourage you to #LeaveTheLeaves! But, like, not on your grass. (Unless you're trying to #KillYourLawn but that's a project for another day.) Thanks!

Learn how fast leaves actually break down (spoiler: it can take a few years) and why some decompose so much faster than others: https://t.co/5uEBXanWFv 5/

Leaf decomposition is a slow process with big ecological benefits

This is why I was so excited to write about the science of how leaves decompose for @WildflowerCtr Wildflower Magazine’s “Leave the Leaves” campaign. 4/

I had been hearing “raking leaves is so dumb, they go away on their own over winter” for years. Friends, that is absolutely false. My oak and maple leaves were all still there come spring, smothering my grass. (I'm sure all experienced landscapers know this, but alas...) 3/

Well. Plot twist: “Leave the Leaves” doesn’t mean “never rake again” (as some of the less-informed marketing actually, mistakenly, tells you) — it means rake leaves OFF your grass and pile them in garden beds and yard corners where they become free mulch and insect habitat. 2/

Have I ever told you about how I almost killed my lawn trying to save the insects? Maybe you’ve heard of “Leave the Leaves” — don’t rake your leaves; create critical overwintering habitat for lots of insects. Sounds easy, no? (And way better than raking…) 1/

Adding this to my reading list, I've been going deep on misinformation and pseudoscience lately* *researching it. not disseminating it lol
This is called "crank magnetism,” which describes the phenomenon where belief in one type of conspiracy or pseudoscience attracts multiple types: https://t.co/FlMzsO5v0J
