Having slept (and I certainly needed to!) on my experience as a speaker, exhibitor and first time attendee
@WeHaveWaysPod
Fest I can now offer some reflections on my experience, and the role, purpose and benefits of
#wargaming
at the event (long thread follows)
I was in Hamley’s toy shop in London yesterday... and was instantly transported back to my childhood when I stepped in front of this display. When I think of all the pocket money I poured into Airfix it’s little wonder they are still going.
Five years ago today we were having fun with
@HobbsTheGamer
at Lard Island. A reminder to celebrate the friendships that this great hobby brings.
#spreadthelard
Me. Circa 1980-81. Not certain, but I’d say that’s Airfix Napoleonics being painted with Humbrol enamels. My brush maintenance system remains largely unchanged.
The world’s largest jump off point. Don’t ask me when I’ll use it, but by crikey it looks the business, if I do say so myself. With thanks to my genie
@Amaz_Ed
for his perseverance. See mate - it worked! .

Just over a week until we take our Arnhem wargames to the
@airbornemuseum
in Oosterbeek . Spine tingling already. Some great work from
@alcal50
@AdeDeacon
and
@Sabotag3dPrint
in particular. It all promises to be rather splendid. If you are in the area 1st/2nd Oct then drop in!
Truly moving to read the messages of condolences on the death of
@HobbsTheGamer
, reflecting the humanity of our wargaming community & a powerful testimony of the friendship we all felt towards Mike - and which he returned. We must find a fitting way to commemorate him.
#RIPHobbsy
A thread detailing some of the cracking games that caught my eye at
#partizan
today. It was tremendous (and slightly scary) to talk to so many people bursting with enthusiasm after such a lengthy lickdown. Mojo refilled!
#spreadthelard
Ok, you asked for it. Here is my own breakfast tribute to
@HobbsTheGamer
. The moment when I ate black pudding for the first time since that B&B in Swansea 30 years ago. Thank you Mike, and Rest In Peace.
#ratemyhobbsy
There will now be a short interval while I puke.
Special day at Lard Island today as we embark on a big Chain of Command as the British attempt break out from the Normandy bridgehead. Operation Cropduster is about to begin
So, the brickwork wallpapering of the church is now done. I'm happy with that. This one is Total Battle Miniatures 28mm. Might try with the Sarissa Plancenoit church and see what happens

As Christmas breaks out across the world I send best wishes to the gaming community of Twitter to say thanks for the inspirational figure photos, game photos, scenario links and general gaming banter. I wish you all a safe, healthy, and very Merry Christmas. Raising a glass🎄
As the mist clears after last night…. A few more pics from yesterday at OML8.2, starting with Phil and Jenny’s superb Normandy game for I Ain’t Been Shot Mum

Something for everyone in
#LardMagazine
, which should be hitting the virtual shelves within 24 hrs. 261 pages of top notch community contributions , which must make this the largest wargames magazine on the planet. 😜
@HobbsTheGamer
funeral is today. Fitting and somewhat spooky then that my phone should have auto generated this video memory of this day 2018 with a What a Tanker event held at
@BIG_Bristol
where Mike deployed his Oddball Sherman.
Farewell and RIP Mike.
Today’s word is ‘Bugger’.
The term used to describe when the wife beats you to the front door to take delivery of what you won on eBay over the weekend.
A year in review. My hobby output for 2022 got off to a good start as these 3D printed Stuarts rolled off the production line, having been in a state of 60% finished for a long time. Prints from
@Amaz_Ed
, which was a theme for the year…

Great to get some Market Garden action back on the table tonight. A win for the PIR at St Oedenrode - but with 5 turn ends the clock is in favour of the Germans...
#chainofcommand
#spreadthelard
When we said ‘yes’ to doing we have fest fest I hadn’t realised that we’d need to man a busy table from 0900 to 1900 for two and a half days, plus a half day of set up. It’s a huge commitment. Yesterday was knackering, but today is expected to be busier and hotter. Send prayers.
My dear wife got quite excited when I said I’d be spending the bank holiday weekend painting doors, windows and walls. Today, however, I appear to be in the dog house.
Saddened to read about what appear to be ludicrous changes at Twitter, with subsequent news of people leaving the platform. Twitter has been a supportive community for
#wargaming
, and has turned distant connections into genuine friends.
XXX Corps push on towards Grave. Great to get a game of
#chainofcommand
on the table at Hammerhead today. Historical scenario on Hell’s Highway at Veghel
#spreadthelard
I want to say a public ‘well done mate’ to my long standing oppo,
@TooFatLardies
on bringing Infamy Infamy to fruition. His deep research, renowned energy and design experience has produced a sensational wargame that brings ancients to life! And no, I haven’t even had a drink. 🍻
Tomorrow at
#Partizan
I will be back in the Lard Zone with an Arnhem table for Chain of Command. This will likely be the last outing of this game at a show for a while, so get yourself along and join in the fun. Red berets optional. Smiles compulsory.
Cream crackered. Super dooper day at
@WeHaveWaysPod
fest - working in a tent heated directly from the earth’s core. Massive thank to everyone who came by - especially those new faces. More tomorrow - but be gentle with us!
A fun few hours with the green stuff. Projectometer current reading ‘excited’. The commandos are magnetised to maximise options. The question is… to base or not to base… I’m a little worried that the paddles may be delicate
#GoCommando
#spreadthelard
Rob’s Chain of Command game was first class. Nice, heavy, rubberised fields that made for an undulating terrain, some really wonderfully crafted trees and unit support sheets that I’ll be nicking for my own games. And who doesn’t want a Ju52 as a support option!
#spreadthelard
That is precisely why wargaming was at WHWF fest, why it should be championed as a tool of engagement & as a methodology that fuels the critical evaluation, reflection & appraisal of historical events which is worthy of its place alongside academic tomes.
What do others think?
