Thread [1/2]: Here's an update on my book BRINGING DARKNESS INSTEAD OF LIGHT: CONVERSATIONS WITH JOHN CARPENTER: The delay in putting together this mammoth volume is in part due to a number of very special surprises @FAB_Press have in store for everyone. Once the full details.

"Once you’ve opened that door where actors talk about being in a film, and they talk about real films in the world of the story, it’s hard to go back. I am fascinated by metacommentary. It’s kind of like poking your head behind the curtain of the theatre." - Wes Craven #horror

"Dante's manic black satire portrays the investigations of a quartet of eternal adolescents into the Klopeks' admittedly unusual lifestyle with enormous glee, reveling in OTT behaviour and absurd dialogue, and tossing out film parodies with reckless abandon." Geoff Andrew #horror

"Some people ask why people would go into a dark room to be scared. I say they are already scared, and they need to have that fear manipulated and massaged. I think of horror movies as the disturbed dreams of a society." - Wes Craven #horror

"THE FUNHOUSE doesn't trade on gratuitous and graphic gore, but it doesn't have to. In little ways, and using the traditional tried and true devices of the genre. it skillfully heightens expectations [and] nicely evokes the chiller of a bygone era. " Alex Keneas, 1981 #horror

"Don't go to that damn carnival. It went through Fairfield last year, when they found the bodies of those two girls in the creek. They needed dental charts to identify [them]. " A superb alternative poster for Tobe Hooper's THE FUNHOUSE (1981) by Devon Whitehead. #horror #art

Recently revisited Christopher Smith's high-calorie Medieval horror flick BLACK DEATH (2010), starring a pre-stardom Eddie Redmayne as a conflicted neophyte monk. Grimly affecting, it's a pustulant slice of haute macabre that deserves far more attention. Recommended! #horror

"At the same time that Dante has a field day brutally satirizing our desire to scare ourselves and others, he also re-creates early-60s cliches with a relish and a feeling for detail that come very close to love." Jonathan Rosenbaum, CHICAGO READER, February 4, 1993 #horror

"I’m deathly afraid of the dark. I still don’t like to hang my feet over the side of the bed at night. I think my motivation for doing these movies is to find out what’s in those dark closets that threatened me as a kid." Rob Bottin, speaking in 1982. #horror

"Carpenter is a bit more than a competent director and comes up with some nice camera work, instilling a sense of eeriness. But unlike his previous efforts, this one falls a little short in shaking up the adrenalin. The ending is clever and not really unexpected." - Lane Crockett

"I recently played myself in [an episode of] CASTLE on TV. That's the king of the roles I get asked to play - I get asked to play myself. That's about all I do well. I have a terrible memory, so remembering all of those lines is just something I couldn't do." - Wes Craven #horror

Jack Davis's rejected cover art for the October 1962 issue of SICK magazine. It depicts Frankenstein's Monster being brought to life by TV's Dr. Ben Casey (Vince Edwards) as Igor looks on. The rag's mascot can be seen in the background holding an overdue electricity bill. #horror
