I just want to add this too, a lot of the music of newer and younger artists today isn’t innovative or quality. Majority of it is just bastardized concepts and sounds that were pioneered from artists like Thug, Carti, Future, or Travis. As a hip-hop listener why would I listen to.

Ultimately, my point is, yes there is some truth to FD’s commentary on the current landscape of Hip-Hop, but the larger issue is today Clout is currency, and talent is an after thought. If Hip-Hop Media put in more effort to actually elevate artists with actual talent and love.

Also you have artist out here that are genuinely talented and making quality music such as OvrKast, Mavi, McKinley Dixon, etc that are not getting nearly the same exposure because their not the type of artists that are going to go to a plaqueboymax or Kai to get in front of their.

You can look at this year’s XXL freshman list as an example of this. Majority of those artist couldn’t even freestyle on a generic trap beat. How did they make it on the cover of the Freshman issue without the most basic skill of being a rapper?.

The greatest thing about the blog era was it was less about antics and more about here are these artists that are making music and if the music was quality and resonated with listeners you organically grew an audience over time.

I think the biggest issue we see today with this genre is that it’s no longer a meritocracy, attention to newer artist and music is primarily driven by “clout” instead of the actual quality of music.
