Twitterverse (Xverse?)! I gave up on "X" a long time ago - but I'm starting the move to the 🦋 place. Find me there, and I'll work on getting back in the habit of sharing cool adventures from our new home in Newfoundland, and my new job studying 🌲🌳🔥 with NRCAN!

Apparently our family fall attire is heavy on the northern research theme ... hats - @NWF_Research, #trailvalleycreek (@Marsh_Lab_TVC ), and @ArcticNet, plus an ArcticNet buff

If you're along the routes out of the NWT with extra space for evacuees, people are looking for anywhere to be able to rest or pitch a tent. The United Way is also running a campaign to support what is a still growing crisis in the NWT right now. 9/n

It's been shocking, as someone with a lot of strong ties to the NWT, to watch this unfold this week. With each day, there is more devastation, threats to communities, and more fire suppression efforts overrun by these immense wildfires. 8/n

Many of the areas burning had only just been hit with widespread devastating fires nine years ago, but climate and weather patterns have turned things into a tinder box. This is not normal. 7/n

Fire is normal in northern boreal forests; but this is not normal. Usually it takes more than 50 years for forests to regrow to the point where there is enough "fuel" for wildfire to really take hold. 6/n

Gas stations along the route are hundreds of kilometers apart, and line ups to refuel are kilometers long. Many began travelling without a known destination for their evacuation centre, though those are becoming set up all across Alberta at this point. 5/n

Residents are travelling out mostly via a single "highway", which passes through these active fires - pilot vehicles escort traffic through these areas to help navigate the risky conditons. 4/n

Many other evacuated communities, towns, and cities have wildfire creeping within 15 km (sometimes closer) of them, despite the best efforts to prevent spread. Keep in mind - one fire traveled over 40 km in a single day last weekend. This is close. 3/n

Currently, 2/3 of the NWT is evacuated - with many others also at different stages of evacuation alerts that could be changed to orders to leave at any time. One community sustained significant damage to 80% of buildings. 2/n

The word "unprecedented" has been used a lot this week to describe the wildfire situation in the Northwest Territories. I'm not sure that the layers and layers of unprecedented reflect how completely overrun the territory is, and the emotional toll of the situation. 1/n
