As we have seen, we are certainly dispelling the common historical myth of Jewish people in business in Nineteenth Century England, the image of the Jewish peddler.

In this piece, we continue to explore the life and family of Abraham Abraham of Liverpool. Abraham’s clients included members of the Royal family and the House of Lords, and he was proud of having a relative in the House of Commons.

Having been with Birkbeck since 2003, I have had the pleasure of working with the teams to develop the College, helping to drive it forward in its mission to provide education for people at all stages of life.

Not only am I announcing this new appointment, but I am also delighted to share I will be taking on the honorary role as President of the Birkbeck Fellowship. This role has been established to encourage engagement among the Fellows and I am pleased to be leading on this.

I am honoured to have been elected by Birkbeck, University of London’s Governors to become one of the College’s new Fellows. It is a role I have proudly accepted, alongside twelve others, who have or have had an association with the College.

Their stories can be brought to life through the artefacts in my collection, including an outdated “instrument for the administration of electric shocks to people with Nervous Diseases”. Enjoy. #jewishhistory #uk.
