Birkbeck is taking significant steps to continue to improve its student’s educational experience and develop as a research-led university with a broad curriculum, that has modern learning facilities and a hybrid digital-campus education model in line with its student needs. 1/4.

This term will also be a particularly memorable one for me as Vice-Chancellor, as it will be the last one in the role. In the new year, I will step back after many great years managing Birkbeck.

As we have seen, we are certainly dispelling the common historical myth of Jewish people in business in Nineteenth Century England, the image of the Jewish peddler.

In this piece, we continue to explore the life and family of Abraham Abraham of Liverpool. Abraham’s clients included members of the Royal family and the House of Lords, and he was proud of having a relative in the House of Commons.

Their stories can be brought to life through the artefacts in my collection, including an outdated “instrument for the administration of electric shocks to people with Nervous Diseases”. Enjoy. #jewishhistory #uk.

The most common image of a Jew in 18th and 19th century England is that of an itinerant, door-to-door peddler. Like those from the pages of Israel Zangwill’s novels. Yet in this post, I’ll explore the tale of two Jewish brothers who made and sold scientific instruments.

In Ten Chief Rabbis, I use pieces from my Anglo-Judaica collection to tell the stories of Britain’s Chief Rabbis and the attacks they faced for being too orthodox, not orthodox enough or resistant to change. If you were unable to attend the talk, you can now view it here.

Shavuot celebrates perhaps the most ancient of sermons, the Jewish People receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai. With my collection, we can continue to hear those words of Torah, throughout the ages as well. #history #blog #shavout.
