In today's Ancient Near East Today, Alexandra Morris discusses the little-mentioned topic of people with disabilities in ancient Egypt, and explores disability as a complex lived experience: https://t.co/oFoIalht7m 📸 Picture by Fixi, via Wikimedia Commons. CC By-SA 3.0.

"Disabled people have always been a part of humanity. Modern day society projects its own discomfort about disability onto the past by ignoring it. - Dr. Alexandra F. Morris https://t.co/DowELjVHGv

Disability has always been a part of human history, including in ancient Egypt. However, until recently the subject has rarely been studied in Egyptology or in a broader ancient world studies context.

A really excellent, horizon-expanding volume with lots of applications not just for Egyptologists but also how we discuss Pharaonic Egypt in museums. Congratulations @DisabledArchaeo + team! 👏

Ive seen A LOT of eugenic-related ideology on my timeline these past weeks. I encourage people to step back, consider who may be the most harmed by these policies, and LISTEN to them about the ways they want you to show up. 5/5

The US continues to disable people. War, working conditions, housing, healthcare, and capitalism are all disabling forces. And yet these will never be the forces considered to "make America healthy again" bc they are the forces that make billionaires rich. 4/5

And certain groups, like those with intellectual disabilities, or those who are multiply marginalized, have been targeted in particular by state forces. We cannot understand ableism without reference to racism, sexism, and transphobia (amongst others analyses of hate). 3/5

Disabled people have been institutionalized, forcibly sterilized, barred from public, murdered, and denied welfare resources over and over and over. The list of atrocities was and continues to be endless. 2/5

CW: ableism Since the founding of the US, physicians, politicians, and lawyers have been trying to eradicate disabled people. RFK's nomination is pretty normal in the long history of eugenics. 1/5

Since the govt doesnt want us to talk about DEI lets just talk about it more than ever. Leverage institutional resources, bring in speakers to give their "expert opinion" at your uni or workplace. Talk about it, write about it, read up on it. Buy books. Commit to the work.
