National Indigenous Peoples Day is a chance to celebrate individuals and communities in ways that honour their living legacies, ancestors, unique cultures and traditions. As a nation, we have much to learn, many silenced voices to hear, and urgent requests to act upon.

Indigenous Peoples Month (National Indigenous History Month) is a time to honour the contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada. This month, and every month, let's have meaningful conversations to learn more about their diverse languages and cultures.

If we learn to confront our biases, we can build relationships rooted in empathy to become better allies for people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and for sharing what Pride means to you!

Happy Pride Month!🏳️‍🌈 Today, I joined HWDSB staff in front of the Education Centre to witness the Intersex-Inclusive Progressive Flag being raised! The flag celebrates members of our local communities who are of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. (1/2)

During Pride Month, we recognize and celebrate Two Spirit & LGBTQIA+ contributions and identities, and the allies who stand in solidarity. It's also a time of action; a time to raise awareness about the hate and violence toward Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people and communities.

In June, we commemorate Indigenous Peoples Month (National Indigenous History Month) to recognize the heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. As we look at the history, we must work towards reconciliation through peaceful and respectful relationships.

It was also fun to hear from Dundas Central students about what they love most about learning. After visiting a class that was having an Empower Reading lesson, students told me about their favourite reading strategies. 👏 Thank you, Dundas Central, for a wonderful visit!

I had a great time visiting @dundascentral last week! It was lovely to see Principal Laura Bartkiw when I arrived. A real treat was starting the day by hearing two pieces from the school's band who will be performing at Jazzfest next week!

I loved seeing how the artwork also connects to Mental Health Week 2023's theme of "My Story." Each piece reflects the likes, interests and experiences of the artist. Thank you, HWDSB students, for sharing your stories through your stunning artwork!

What better way to wrap up Education Week 2023 than to visit HWDSB's student Art Exhibit! 🎨 The Exhibit features creations from gifted student artists across HWDSB elementary and secondary schools.
