Not comparable to James' expertise but I recall being shocked at the stayaway subs rates when I started, hadn't increased in over a decade, don't think they have increased much in relation to cost of living. & certainly no form of compensation for the impact on work/life balance.

There's this overwhelming perception that as a heritage worker you'll do it just for the love of it, or that you should just be "grateful to be in archaeology" (I remember that phrase being used more than once by higher ups, alongside "back in my day").

Still being offered talks by local history societies who will not budge on a flat rate of £50. Same fee as 20+ years ago. After travel costs of £15-20 taken off, that's £6-7 per hour for the average 5 hours spent out of the house. Not even minimum wage. I despair.
