Magnificent obituary of the great Allan Massie, written by Magnus Linklater.

Perhaps the finest Scottish novelist of the postwar era, who won fame across Europe but who was less favoured by the literary establishment north of the border

Just caught up with last night’s @BBCPanorama programme giving a fascinating insight into the work of @BBCSteveR as the BBC’s Russia Editor and the challenges he faces in reporting from there. Well worth an hour of your time to watch on catchup.

Those of us of a certain age who never missed an episode of M*A*S*H (or the repeats) will love this post below….. Happy Birthday tomorrow Alan.

Reading and listening to Mark Tully as a youngster was one of the things that made me want to be a reporter of the world. For that I’m so grateful. Today we need so much more of the sensitive and searing reportage he gave us.
Sad to learn of the death of former BBC foreign correspondent Sir Mark Tully. For so many years he was known as the ‘Voice of India.’ As a tribute I play one of the pieces Sir Mark selected on BBC Radio’s Desert Island Discs: Danny Boy.

Sorry to hear about the death of Mark Tully. Anyone who worked in India for the BBC instantly became the beneficiary of his wisdom, kindness, humour and, above all, reputation. In India Mark Tully was the BBC. An absolute giant.

Entirely personal, but I’d be grateful if my Government would call the US Ambassador in to explain and justify the comments made about our service personnel by his President. He should then be told that there will be no visit to Washington by our King and Queen. Thankyou

I notched up another year today. Obviously I’m no longer in the first flush of youth. I can’t tell you how much my darling wife’s card cheered me up 🤣

On a cold North Berwick Sunday afternoon there are worse places to be than in front of a fire with a beer.

You’d never guess that our two year old grandson has arrived for Christmas. His company more than makes up for the bomb site he leaves in his wake.
