This suggests that TCOF1 may have played an evolutionary role in the adaptation of tetrapods from water to land 🌍🧬. Its evolution could have been a key driver of complex craniofacial development in tetrapods—a feature absent in zebrafish and other non-tetrapods.

🐟In zebrafish, the functions attributed to TCOF1 and NOLC1 are carried out by a single gene, nolc1. 🌳 Our phylogenetic tree shows that TCOF1 orthologues are mostly restricted to tetrapods.

🔍Using comparative genomics and computational tools, we analyzed TCOF1 & NOLC1 orthology across vertebrates. We found fish-specific genes, the LLCP (LisH-containing Low Complexity Proteins) that resemble TCOF1, but critical features are missing.
