This doctor says the physical effects of colonialism can still be felt on South Asians today. Dr. Mubin Syed says doctors need to understand the needs of different ethnicities when giving treatment.

Great thread clarifying differences in fat storage and how weight/BMI alone is not a good predictor for developing T2DM or CVD.

@teragramytrehod @Sathnam .@FaimaBakar @Sathnam, its true that South Asians (& to lesser extent East Asians like me) have increased tendency for T2 diabetes given a similar BMI. Reason is not increased storage, but having a lower 'safe fat storage' capacity, compared to eg white folks or Polynesians 1/n.

South Asians have a tendency to generate/store fat & not burn it off coz of the way our bodies have evolved after becoming starvation adapted due to famines (esp in colonial times).Just one famine doubles the risk of diabetes & obesity in next generations .

The health risks South Asians face aren't just down to lifestyle. Colonialism has a lot to answer for.

Dyslipidemia is a condition of too much fat and/or cholesterol in the blood that can lead to heart attacks. Hyperglycemia is high blood sugar, another condition that leaves patients at risk for diabetes.

The evidence is mounting. South Asian bodies are much more 'intolerant' of fat. In fact, we get Metabolic Syndrome (unhealthy) at lower BMIs and waist circumferences. We are already obese (not just overweight) when many other ethnicities are still considered 'normal'.
