The misconception that Africa has no writing system, is a 19th c. European missionary invention. Missionaries introduced Roman script in Africa to replace earlier writing systems. Africa has one of the world oldest system of writing. e.g #Ethiopia #Nubia #Egypt #Nigeria #Nsibidi

The Ethiopian #Orthodox church follow the Julian calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar used by western countries. Easter occurs later, this year for #Ethiopia it will be on the 19th of April. The Harrowing of Hell, 18th c. Ethiopian MS @BLAsia_Africa #HappyEaster

Seals have been used in Ethiopia to symbolise official power & authority for centuries. The earliest mention of the use of.Seal (ማኅተም) dates to 14th C. Seals of  Sahle Selassie  ሣህለ ሥላሴ, (1795 –1847) King of Shewa and.King Menelik II ዳግማዊ ምኒልክ (1844 - 1913).

The full text of the "Apocalypse of Peter" has only survived in the Ethiopian Ge'ez language. Initially written in Greek in the 2nd c. AD a dialogue between Jesus & St Peter about the judgment day & the end times. The Ms is currently held in Paris, ref as Ethiopien d'Abbadie 51

I want to thank the staff at the Asian and African Studies Reading Room at the @britishlibrary for being wonderful. The cyberattack has meant untold difficulties, but they have kept the research running and have been incredibly kind and helpful to me the past three weeks. Bravo!!.

I will be presenting at the 112th Biblioco 2024 conference, on the Maqdala Mss collection, the restitution debate & the need to readdress the historical marginalization of Ethiopian manuscripts from the mainstream discourse of codicology. Hamburg 4-7 June.

In Ethiopian culture, dreams are important. The interpretation of dreams is considered crucial, as they are seen as divine messages offering guidance or warning. Some Ethiopian Mss mention dream healing & ways of interpreting archetypal dreams 18th C. Jacob's Ladder.#mentalhealth

Piassa was torn down as part of a “road-widening project”. A tailor in a neighbouring district to Piassa said they were given one hour to clear their shop, with no explanation. They later discovered it is due to be replaced by a cycle path.
