@GopherRadio p s. Lack of Rashod Bateman sounded harsh. Although they don't have someone with Rashod's ability to take the top off the D all alone, I believe this WR room, on paper, has the most talent since 2019. So I don't believe skill set is a big factor in lack of explosive plays.

Conclusion: this is a coaching decision. MN is not throwing downfield into single coverage. And I don't know if they ever have in recent history. Less swings for the fence = less extra base hits. (5/6)

-This year, MN passing route trees actually include MORE vertical routes like seams compared to last year. (Quality of opponent may be a factor here, we'll see.) -Although the average depth of target has increased, they are not throwing to the deepest routes. (4/6)

Second observation: -While MN doesn't have a Rashod Bateman on the roster to create explosive plays himself, I believe skill set is only a minor factor in the lack of explosive pass plays. (3/6)

-Gophers most conservative game theory occurs when the offense crosses into field goal range Conclusion: Minnesota is robbing themselves of explosive play opportunities by going turtle mode in FG range (2/6)

A couple of thoughts regarding #Gophers lack of explosive plays on offense... Things that are related: -Defensive blitz rate increases when offenses cross the 50 yard line -Chance for an offensive explosive play (and a minus play) increase when defenses blitz (1/6)

Lastly, this #Gophers team (both O & D) appear to execute better when they play with urgency. Some teams play better with a methodical, calculated approach. Others play better with a flying around, high intensity approach. This team is definitely the latter thus far.

Credit to UCLA QB Gerbers who played the best any QB has played vs MN so far this year. #Gophers high pressure defense will live and die based on their ability to generate minus plays and turnovers while trading giving up explosive plays at times.

UCLA's offense also had an excellent gameplan and scheme to start the game. QB Gerbers was prepared to get the ball out quick and anticipated many of MN's blitzes. Although the #Gophers were able to get some key sacks in hindsight they fared better dropping into coverage.

The Brosmer-Jackson combination is going to be the most sustainable offensive weapon going forward IMO. Many times the coverage on Jackson was very good but Brosmer would throw a near perfect pass and Jackson would win the contested catch. It's tough to gameplan against that.

UCLA ran a matchup style zone pass defense where they would appear to play man at first but "pass off" receivers to one another. This worked well until a coverage bust resulted in the Elijah Spencer TD.

IMO the best offensive halftime adjustment of the year came this game using Darius to draw the LBs out of the play. #Gophers countered with bootlegs and the key 3rd down screen to Le'Meke late in the game using this adjustment.

UCLA's defensive gameplan was to "full send" the LBs downhill towards Darius Taylor when he was in the game. This maden it difficult for the o-line on running plays and also limited Darius on passing plays.

Previously this year when the #Gophers have had a really bad half or quarter it's because of their own mistakes or lack of execution. IMO the 1st half vs UCLA was more about a great gameplan, scheme, and execution from UCLA on both sides of the ball.
