Remasters and remakes are not preservation. Doesn't get more obvious than this. Capcom was ready to overwrite their own history. The dawn of arguably the biggest horror franchise in the world today wasn't worth it to them. Baffling how little companies care about their legacy.

Believe it or not, we need those casual players, too, so game consoles could fail more if they become too premium and expensive and lose that casual safety net.
There is a certain demographic of gamer who will literally only ever buy the new Call of Duty, Madden, or FIFA (EA FC now) and absolutely nothing else all year. Other than that, quality AAA titles do seem to be far fewer in between now, sadly.

I think number one is the main culprit. It's becoming a premium hobby. Better off playing on your phone, a console you already have, or a cheap device.
Why? 1> Too expensive 2> Greed with DLC that should be in the base game 3> Greed with micro transactions 4> 99% guaranteed to be a broken, buggy mess at launch 5> Heavily discounted after a few weeks 6> The knowledge that the publisher can take the game from you when they wish
