I'm going to miss these old wooden sidewalks after the Lake Street bridge is replaced next year, as announced this week. They're a throwback to 1916, when it was built, and are, I'm pretty sure, the last wooden sidewalks on any of the 20 downtown bridges.

Just because it was so pretty when I passed it this morning: the Pierce Street, Wicker Park home designed by William Ohlhaber in 1888 for Hermann Weinhardt. Weinhardt was a partner in Niemann & Weinhardt, his father-in-law’s company that made tables.

After almost two and a half years closed, the southern portion of the Fort Sheridan preserve re-opened this weekend. It's a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline, as well as ravines and bluffs.

It’s finally happening! The Old Heidelberg building is coming back to life as a Blick art supplies store Sept 1. Built 1934 for the Eitel family’s German restaurant, later Ronny’s Steak Palace, still later Argo Tea, and closed since early 2020.

If he becomes Chicago's next mayor, Brandon Johnson will revive the push for anti-homelessness "mansion tax," where buyers of residential or commercial properties at $1 m or more pay $19,000 per $1 m purchase price to combat homelessness.

Here's the latest fast-selling midcentury. It's in Glen Ellyn, built in 1956 (no architect named in the listing). Hit the market Oct 5 priced at $475,000, got snapped up that day and sold Oct 28 for $500,000.

Ooh, look at the retro basement in this house for sale in Lombard. Built in 1955 by a man who recently died, and being sold by his family. Asking $275,000. His grandson is building something inspired in part by this. I'll have a story out on that later today.

350 years ago on about Sept. 1, a group of Kaskaskia people of the Illinewek showed an exploration party led by Louis Jolliet with Father Jacques Marquette a short route to from the Des Plaines River to the Chicago River.

@zoegalland “no one could possibly think there was anything left to learn from a reporter flying in to a largely white Midwestern town, relitigating the 2016 election, and flying out again,” so I stayed a whole month and learned all the cliches about reporting on the lost industrial Midwest.

Granny flats could soon be ok city-wide. 2 Alds (including Zoning Cmtee chair) and the mayor's policy chief all told me they want to expand ADUs beyond the pilot zones. It's mostly a question of when.

It’s great to see a new tenant is lined up for the most huggable building in the Loop, built in 1934 as the Old Heidelberg restaurant. The last user, Argo Tea, shut down in early 2020, before the pandemic hit. Here’s a history we did in late 2019:
