After many months in a very cold room, we learned how the formation of ice crystals and their rise to the waters surface can incorporate nanoplastics and microplastics in sea ice! Read more in our latest publication here:

Several factors make regulations of microplastics challenging. Previously I wrote how regulations should be precise to incentivize innovation and environmental safety.Essential Use Concept may be one step forward-as this is meant as a convo starter,I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Getting out of the lab and into the field: how are microplastics transported and what are their impacts? Assessing changes under environmentally relevant conditions provides information in and of itself, but also contextualizes lab work. To learn more:

After publishing a perspective on how plastics in the atmosphere theoretically may (or may not) play a role in cloud formation like other aerosols, we went to lab to test out these hypotheses! The resulting manuscript is now online and another great collab is in the books!😊

Of course, this chapter closing at ETH does not mean the end to any of the great things listed above 😉 While it will be in a different context, I'm ready to bring all this good energy and enthusiasm into the next chapter. Exciting changes ahead!.

So, a big THANK YOU to all the students, colleagues and friends who gave me a very fulfilling and exciting life since I've moved to Switzerland - in science, in the mountains, around the dinner table, and with all our discussions and adventures.

What I'm most proud of is the collaborative and interdisciplinary spirit which was fostered in the Environmental Chemistry of Anthropogenic Materials group, which percolated into all of my working relationships across scientific disciplines, working sectors, and around the world.

As my last workday at ETH Zürich, there are a big mix of emotions. I'm looking forward to new challenges and adventures (more info to come soon!), but at the same time sad to say goodbye to my awesome team, colleagues near and far, and Zürich (though, I'll stay in Switzerland!).

While conducting experiments on microplastics settling dynamics when aggregated with algae, we noticed something curious: with high particle conc, behavior was different. We now assessed how settling behavior is influenced by other particles in suspension.

The growing environmental impacts of plastics across their lifecycle sparked the UN Plastics Treaty. Our latest paper explores the pros and cons of market-based instruments, specifically cap-and-trade systems, for plastics governance. Check it out here:
