I truly believe that rebuilding the traditional black family is possible, but only if the institutions that claim to care about social justice & racial disparities marshal their resources to make “marriage before carriage” the standard again.

There’s been a lot of talk recently about race, crime, and culture on this app, particularly related to the black community. The people doing it claim that they are simply saying things that people arent allowed—or afraid—to say. But there is something else at play here. 🧵

What policies must be enacted before a man and woman commit to each other as husband and wife *before* bringing a child into the world? Please be specific.

the only problem i have w/this framing is that the heritage foundation does not support policies that'll make this possible for those who are struggling where are the incentives or support? you can't just shame people or strip them of safety nets, then expect them to be grateful

A liberal caller on C-SPAN today asked Heritage Research Fellow @DelanoSquires if he was a DEI hire. It didn’t end well for him. “ It’s interesting that some of the same people who say that black folks need DEI and celebrate DEI will use DEI as a way to insult black people with

The caller felt I was insulting his single mother. I did no such thing, but that’s what people assume when you promote the ideal. We have allowed the feelings of adults to take priority over the needs of children for far too long. That time is over. @cspanwj

Yes, the median household income for black married couples under 65, is $121,900, per the US Census Bureau. There is no path to closing racial disparities (assuming that’s even possible) without tackling differences in family structure.

Putting aside the swipe about me being a “DEI” hire, this @cspanwj caller proves that far too many people believe Uncle Sam is a suitable replacement for a father in the home. The fact that *black* men repeat this line and minimize their importance in the 🏡makes it even worse.

Yes, the CDC’s 2013 father study showed black dads were the most involved, but living arrangements—not race—was a far more important factor. Nearly 72% of dads w/kids under 5 ate with them every day. That drops to 8% for dads who don’t live with their children (p13). @cspanwj

Many thanks to @CBSNews for inviting me to contribute to this special report on the challenges facing men and boys today. This clip is a good example of the confusion & contention that resulted from blowing up traditional gender roles. Link to the full video in the tweet below.

Praying for his family and friends. What a loss to those who knew him and benefited from his ministry. I’m glad I had an opportunity to tell him how much I benefited from his teaching.

Now is the perfect time to exercise that agency because there is condescension in corners of the political left & contempt in corners of the political right. That doesn’t mean we can’t work with other groups, but the support of true allies must always complement our own efforts.

And when it comes to the black community specifically, my hope is to see thinkers & doers use their social, political, & economic capital to create, support, & rebuild institutions in our own communities on a biblical foundation that produces public morality & private virtue.

I think it’s good practice to avoid racializing problems in such a way that individualizes the problems of your in-group while generalizing the problems of out-groups. That type of partiality is both bad doctrine & practice—no matter how many times you yell “pEr CaPiTa” online.

I have as little interest in debating the sins of “black culture” w/a pastor in Utah as I do the sins of “whiteness” from a pastor in Chicago. Social media creates a market for that type of content, but I’ll pass on self-interested actors feigning concern for the “other.”
