Content IP is at the very center of PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo (and every other games company). Easily accessible, monetizable interactive entertainment is the main avenue for IP but it's not the final destination. The most valuable IP can be adapted to all forms of media.

To summarize yesterday's post about Xbox: Microsoft have made Xbox invaluable to the games industry (games, services, distribution, publishing, etc). They aren't SEGA--it's so far beyond that now. The real question I have: can Xbox become valuable to its own brand again?

I absolutely know the economics involved in this. Physical games aren't cheap to make, and aren't getting any cheaper. It's not like how I'm thinking, I know that. But that's just how it feels, and physical games from Western companies often feel like token gestures.

I know it's not true, and that creatives absolutely want to give you as much art/content as possible... But as a player, it does sometimes feel like companies deliberately make physical releases bad so that we'll just stop asking for them.

During today's Project Amethyst video, Sony's Mark Cerny specifically mentioned that AMD's new tech addresses very important spec for handhelds: power consumption. "There's a multitude of benefits for this, including lower power consumption..." https://t.co/6kYgqQu8f4

Over 60% of US gamers only buy one or two games per year, via Circana ➡️ https://t.co/i5O0eBDvIT Only about 14% buy one game or more per month: "Hyper enthusiast, price-insensitive players are really keeping things going, especially in the non F2P gaming space"

Also quick note on comments about Xbox following SEGA's path and leaving console production. SEGA financials: "For fiscal year 2025 (ending March 31, 2025), Sega Sammy Holdings reported ¥428.9 billion ($2.89 billion) in net sales." Xbox can't operate on this budget.

Sony x AMD's new Universal Compression might be the most impressive part of the presentation. PS5's compression tech opted for speed. PS6's compression tech adds efficiency to the formula. Memory bandwidth is a key constraint that game devs face when working with consoles.

Call of Duty will suffer. Minecraft will suffer. Xbox has some of the most valuable games on the market. The Xbox organization as a whole will bring in a lot less money. What does less money mean in today's environment? We've seen what happens.

If Xbox consoles are pulled from market, it will have a cascade effect that will lead to: • Mass layoffs, less games being produced • Content and services being significantly scaled back The devaluation of Big 3 member w/ trillion dollar market cap isn't good news.

Microsoft deliberately disrupted its video games business by introducing Game Pass. That disruption has now led to a lucrative $5 billion service that's apparently profitable. But more importantly, it made Xbox users -highly- embedded into services.

Two main reasons Microsoft can't stop making Xbox hardware: 1) Xbox console users are consistent spenders 2) Game Pass loses its most effective playerbase The reality is that Microsoft has not found a viable home for its games business that can exist without Xbox hardware.
