where henry rejected love and chose control, will choosing mike is him breaking that pattern. it’s not just romantic, it’s narrative. it’s will proving that love is not a weakness, and in doing so, severing the very belief that tethered henry’s soul to his in the first place.

he has to choose love while he is afraid. he has to believe what mike is saying and wholeheartedly accept it, even when fear is telling him it’s dangerous.

to untether his soul from henrys, i believe mike is going to confess to will in the finale. and unlike henry, will has to choose differently.

fear overtakes love, and that choice is what allows the MF to consume him. and that’s exactly what’s happening right now. whatever vecna showed will made him feel like his love for mike is a weakness. it backs him into the same corner henry was in, and it triggers henry as well.

we know that creelby and byler parallel each other, and in the first shadow henry succumbs to the mindflayer after believing his love for patty was a weakness. he sees love as something that makes him vulnerable, something that can be used against him.

if this theory is true then henry is altering wills perception, not in an evil way but in an automatic way. will is subconsciously allowing henrys fears to be true for him. will has to actively choose differently to untether his soul from henrys, and that’s where mike comes in.

in wills mind, he probably thinks the only way for vecna to be defeated is if he sacrifices himself. but i personally believe there is another way.

and if you really listen to wills speech it has undertones of henry in it. when it comes to vecna being a lich, in d&d it’s said that the only way to defeat a lich is to destroy its phylactery, which is the physical object the lichs soul is tethered to. that is obviously will.

in the coming out scene, it was obviously really triggering and hard to watch. but i believe it was done that way to emphasize that it was henrys fear overtaking will in that moment. in the first shadow, henry has a mantra, “i’m normal, i’m henry creel,”

and will is allowing it, which is why the memories are beginning to bleed. we are actively watching will choose fear over love, just like henry.

henrys SOUL (his humanity) is tethered to wills, so whenever will begins to feel emotions like fear, henry is activated. this is not something evil happening, this is henry responding in the way he always has. the way his soul knows how to respond.

it’s important to note that henry creel is not vecna. a lot of people think that because we saw inconsistencies in wills coming out scene and henrys memories bleeding through will, that will is possessed. but that’s not necessarily true.

i’m sure people already know this but in d&d vecna is a lich. to become a lich you have to bind your soul to a physical object in order to become immortal.
