On Friday, I am releasing my solo debut album - a collection of pieces based on a set of tapes recorded by my father's family in 1959, a few years after the emigrated from Italy to Canada.

They were recorded on a Geloso G 255 - "un magnetofono per tutti" - "a tape recorder for all", a portable radio-sized device that allowed for home recording. My uncle digitised them a few years ago and I've been obsessed with them since.

These tapes were sent back to Italy to give a sense of how the family was doing in their new home, and include news of day-to-day minutiae, songs, news about other Italians who had made a similar move, and general updates on their life in Canada.
