This is a depiction of an actual “Auto de fé” carried out during the Spanish Inquisition on June 30, 1680 at the Plaza Mayor in Madrid Spain. 118 “heretics” were punished during this 14 hour tribunal in front of a crowd of 50,000 Spanish bystanders watching. Fransisco Rezi 1683

The victims of the Inquisition can be seen in the depiction in the tall red hats of shame. The color red was a reference to the hellfire and damnation their accusers determined was their lot. The height of the hats were to make them extremely visible so there was no hiding.
