In the end, my seat flipped at the election and I find myself doing something different. Moral of the story - there’ll be many bumps, road blocks and diversions in your path but in all you do, meet good people and learn from them. You won’t go far wrong. #NoWrongPath.

Much of that learning came from my team of staff (they were the very best) who taught, challenged and shaped me, even as I served in elected office. Other mentors included @russrook who I work with today but who always had time for a coffee and word of encouragement.

After all that, I got elected in my own right, serving 7 years in the House of Commons as MP for my home community. I learned more in that 7 years than I suspect any academic course could ever teach!.

In all that time, I learned at the feet (and asked hundreds of questions!) of people with lots of knowledge, experience and insight - some based on their academia, some based on many years doing their job.

At a time when many of my peers stayed on at school/went to university, I left at 16 years old and undertook an apprenticeship with Glasgow City Council. After completing my modern apprenticeship, I worked as a caseworker, parliamentary staffer, organiser.

Best wishes to everyone getting their exam results. Take it from me - your results today won’t define the rest of your life & there’ll still be many bumps along the way. Word to the wise - surround yourself with good people/mentors & you’ll soon learn ‘the world’s yer oyster’!

Really pleased to see record levels of hip and knee operations delivered by our NHS in 2024. I’m grateful to staff across Scotland for their efforts in improving delivery & outcomes for patients. We clearly need to go even further & investments expected to deliver more this year.

Great to see progress on this - sincere thanks to our NHS staff for delivering improvements to service, especially as we know that our NHS is under more pressure than ever. More to do, clearly, but really welcome any progress as we seek to make Scotland healthier. 🏴.
More people than ever are getting the hip and knee operations they need. Planned NHS procedures are up, waiting times are down, and hospital stays are getting shorter. Still more to do, but this is real progress – thanks to the hard work of NHS staff across Scotland. 👏

The brutal slog of travelling hundreds of miles to Parliament every week and missing your wee ones’ key stages and milestones is a sacrifice too few people truly understand. Very best wishes to Kate for her future outside of politics.
After careful thought over recess, I’ve decided not to seek re-election to @scotparl next year. I’ve written to the First Minister this morning 👇🏽. I will continue to serve the First Minister, the Government and my constituents to the best of my ability until May 2026.
