When I started running a few years ago, I was so excited believing back then that I no longer have to do another annoying crunch to get rid of my beer belly.

Consider heart rate, particularly if you're a new runner. Pay attention not only during workouts, but also when you are not running. As you become more fit, your resting heart rate should begin to decline. This is because of improvements in your cardiovascular system.
