I’m really going to miss writing for @JazzTimes, whose legacy was irreparably harmed this week. This is probably my last review that will ever run in the magazine. If you wrote for JT, link me to the stories you’re most proud of.

Wayne comes over to me and says “I’m down for floating around like Eric (Dolphy) used to.” whew!! Direct from the maestro’s being. What a night that was. Incredible! Rest in peace, Wayne and thank you for your wisdom, creativity and humanity! 4/4

There is one moment which I will always cherish. In Tokyo in July 1987 there was a live under the sky performance featuring me, Wayne, Jack DeJohnette, Richie Beirach & Eddie Gomez. The rehearsal took place in the lobby of the hotel & was a talk down about the repertoire etc. 3/4

One can feel the imagery in Wayne’s music through his tunes, painting pictures, while his relationship to the soprano saxophone gave me a constant lesson on the “fish horn.” With a spirit and presence like no other, he will forever remain an indelible voice in the cosmos. 2/4

My wife Caris and I were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Wayne Shorter. He was an inspiration both musically and personally to both of us. 1/4

I was young and a fledging bandleader with a lot to learn musically and leadership-wise. Badal was my go-to brother for advice and more…..he helped me grow up! His wife, Geeta, is a beautiful woman who loved Badal deeply. RIP Sweet Hands! 5/#

Badal saw an opportunity and jumped on it becoming a force of nature for Mies, Ornette Coleman, Pharaoh Sanders & other heavy weights. More personal: In my first group Lookout Farm I had Badal in the band for a while, most notably with a trip to India during that period. 4/

In Bangladesh (home city) Badal had studied accounting. From what I remember he hardly touched a tabla till these dates came about. You have to remember that world music was new and considered exotic….why not throw a conga drum here, a bell tree there, etc? 3/

He wasn’t into the Indian tabla mode like Zakir H. and others. But if you wanted a groove at a medium tempo, Badal was your man. We first met recording with Miles “On The Corner” followed very soon on John McLaughlin’s “My Goals Beyond.” 2/

PASSINGS: BADAL “SWEET HANDS” ROY From what I understand the expression “Sweet Hands” would be something you would say describing a young talent as “he has sweet hands.” Badal’s hands were those he used to instigate some of one of the deepest grooves around. 1/

Thank you @PostGenreMedia!
In part two with @NEAarts Jazz Master @Dave_Liebman we discuss Lookout Farm but focus primarily on the influence of @JohnColtrane, including Liebman’s Expansions quintet’s newest, Selflessness, out now on @DotTimeRecords

Thank you @gb_watchman! It was a pleasure.
With 'Selflessness,' Dave Liebman puts late-period John Coltrane into an accessible frame @gb_watchman

Pee would wait till the end of the day to write a chart for Esther Phillips for example in a few hours & HAND WRITTEN! Plus I learned a lot about space & sound through listening to & playing with Pee. For a minute it was the rock’n roll life! /6

The musical premise was that Pee Wee would be the funkmeister while I brought the Coltrane influence in. I really enjoyed living with the Ellis fam. Great people, good food & a lot of fun. I needed a break from the Apple & the west coast scenario was appropriate at that time. /5

…with the Elvin Jones group and later Miles, taking part in a great club called the Keystone Korner. With vocals, a few classics (Tequila) and originals, the Ellis-Liebman Band hopefully worked its way towards stardom, which eluded us. /4

…financed a van and generally supported us while we formed a band….it’s a long story but the upshot was Pee Wee with his wife Barbara and son Junior found a house boat for us to live in. I had always wanted to hang in the Bay Area after my first visit there in the early 70s /3
