A350 Captain. Ex A380/318/319/320/321/B737. Music/science/sport/film/F1 fan. My thoughts/views not those of employer. Can’t answer company specific questions.
So after 9 months of being grounded, this just happened! 😄 Landed this morning in Dubai having flown the
@Airbus
A350-1000 for the first time. Lovely aircraft. Feeling very lucky to have the opportunity to fly this wonderful machine. 😄✈️
On our way to
@AUStinAirport
yesterday we flew almost directly over the top of an
@etihad
@Airbus
#A350
We were at 38000 feet with the other aircraft at 37000 feet as they crossed underneath us. This is the
@etihad
“50 Years” livery aircraft A6-XWB 😄✈️ It looked fabulous.
Having taken off 16 minutes before us,after about 8 1/2 hours we finally caught up with and overtook our colleagues flying the
@BoeingAirplanes
#B777
G-STBL to
@flyLAXairport
We were flying our
@Airbus
#A350
at 34000 feet and they at 36000 feet. The A350 is quite fast😄✈️
Just completed one of the longest flights I’ve flown. Haneda Airport, Tokyo to
@HeathrowAirport
We were in the air for 14 hours 26 minutes in
@Airbus
A350-1000 G-XWBF Planned distance flown 7042 nautical miles plus we did a bit extra with a couple of holds on arrival. It was such…
Checked out and fully qualified as Captain to fly the superb
@British_Airways
@Airbus
#A350
this morning on the flight back from Boston. Now the training is complete I can’t wait to show everyone how brilliant my new toy is! 😄✈️ Feeling very lucky. Thanks for all your support.👍🏻
The
@Airbus
#A350
has a higher normal cruise speed than most jets at Mach 0.85, that’s 85% of the speed of sound. A320 cruises at Mach 0.78, A380 and 777 at Mach 0.83 typically and 787 at similar to the A350. Here we are overtaking (in real time) an aircraft 1000 feet below us 😄
For those watching
@BigJetTVLIVE
@HeathrowAirport
and enjoying the piloting skills of my friends and colleagues from all airlines,maybe this is one of those days people realise we don’t just sit up the front pressing buttons😂No autolands today,it’s too windy for the automatics👍
A short video of us overtaking (undertaking?!)
@TurkishAirlines
@Airbus
#A330
TC-JOF on its flight from Dubai to Istanbul earlier. We were at 36000 feet and the A330 at 38000 feet. We were cruising at Mach 0.85 and the A330 typically cruises at Mach 0.82/0.83. We waved😄😂👋🙋♂️
An aviation icon and the aircraft most pilots grew up wanting to fly. A few hours ago
@British_Airways
announced the retirement of the
@Boeing
747-400. A favourite with pilots and cabin crew and, along with Concorde, the most recognisable aircraft in the world. “The Queen”✈️
#QOTS
I’ve been fortunate enough to find out I’m moving to the beautiful
#A350
I will be extremely sad to leave the
#A380
, but excited at the prospect of flying the most beautiful
@Airbus
aircraft. I only hope all those BA pilots without a flying seat can also return to flying soon...2
After much speculation
@British_Airways
are announcing today that they are going to paint a number of aircraft in legacy paint schemes this year to celebrate the centenary. The first will be G-BYGC which will be painted in BOAC livery. Due by 18th February.
#BA100
#BASMART
😄✈️
It’s 25 years since
@British_Airways
Concorde’s fastest Atlantic crossing. On 7th Feb 1996 G-BOAD flew New York to
@HeathrowAirport
in just 2 hours 52 minutes 59 seconds. I think it will be quite a while before we see this record broken! This aircraft is now in New York. 😄✈️
On our flight from
@HeathrowAirport
to Los Angeles we were lucky enough to get some great views of Greenland. Here is a timelapse video from the east to west coasts taken from 38000 feet using my iPhone.
So that’s the sim check passed, licence signed and I’m officially allowed to fly the
#A380
for another year. Now, if someone could just arrange for us to get these amazing aircraft back in the sky it would be nice to have a real one to fly 😄👍🏻✈️
@British_Airways
One of the great advantages of
@Airbus
aircraft from a pilot’s perspective is the fitting of a table! We can have this because we use a sidestick to fly the aircraft rather than a control column which would go between your knees.Result? Civilised way to eat dinner at 39000 feet😎
Foot down crossing the Atlantic. Due to the headwinds today we flew at a slightly increased speed of Mach 0.86 which meant we overtook quite a few aircraft on the way. Still a bit slower than Concorde though! 😄✈️
Start of the new year and time to get back to work. Flying with
@scottiebateman
today in
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBC Princess Cinderella to
@SanDiegoAirport
as BA44N (BA273) with a flight time of 10h20m. Very northerly route taking us up to 72°N. Hoping for some good views. 😄✈️
Without any shadow of a doubt the most beautiful and amazing airliner ever constructed. They just don’t make them like this anymore, which is a crying shame.
#concorde
Next week I’m actually back to full time flying.
I’ve had a few jobs over the last 11 months..
Decorating - not bad at landings and my work on ceilings is up there.
Cleaning - polishing mirrors was a job I could see myself doing.
But it will be nice to get back to my proper job✈️
Merry Christmas everyone 🎄 I’m going to take some time away from social media until the New Year. So I hope everyone who has been generous enough to follow my posts and make me laugh on here this year has a happy and safe Christmas. Best wishes for 2022. Be careful out there😄
Thanks to the
@BigJetTVLIVE
team for filming our landing at
@HeathrowAirport
this afternoon as BA272 in
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBE Princess Esmerelda. Jerry said he wasn’t sure who was doing what in the flight deck. On this occasion it was my landing.
@scottiebateman
was on the P3 seat
Amazing views over China on the way to Hong Kong earlier. This time lapse shows the very high terrain, up to 20000 feet, to the north west of Lanzhou.

Extremely sad to hear this morning that
@British_Airways
is to retire the
#A318
from service. I was very proud to be part of the LCY-JFK via SNN service when it started in 2009. A wonderful fleet, a great aircraft and met some lovely frequent passengers. Bye BabyBus 😢
For anyone who loves to fly but hasn’t been able to enjoy the view out of the window when airborne recently due to all the restrictions, here is a video taken by one of our passengers today of our landing at
@HeathrowAirport
in
@British_Airways
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBE 😄✈️
I often show photos of the
#viewfromtheflightdeck
in order to give people an idea of the kind of things we see out of our window. But for today’s
#flyingphotooftheday
I thought I’d show you want I spend most of my time seeing, the view outside but also the instrument view. 😄✈️
First aircraft (G-XLEG
#A380
) to land
@HeathrowAirport
this morning as the BA28 from Hong Kong. No aircraft is allowed to land before 0432 so we judge our speed all the way to make sure we don’t have to hold on arrival. Time for a few days off now. Merry Christmas everyone.😄👍🏻🎅🏻
When I started this account I never dreamed so many people would be interested in the things I post! Some people said it was (and still is!) a waste of time. But thank you to each and every person who has shown that not to be the case. Humbled.
#BASMART
@British_Airways
Cape Town really is a beautiful place. 😄 If you get the chance to visit you’ll find the scenery spectacular, the people very friendly, the prices very reasonable and the food and wines superb. Add it to your list of future destinations. 😄✈️
Some people are saying modern aircraft such as the 737MAX are too complex. I disagree. The A380 is a far more complex aircraft and we fly it very safely every day. Pilots are capable of understanding aircraft systems so long as the manuals contain the information we need.
So that’s it for another year and another decade. Arrived in Johannesburg
@ortambo
after flying Nelly G-XLEL
#A380
from
@HeathrowAirport
last night as BA57. Heartfelt thank you to everyone who has tracked my aviation posts etc. Have a great New Year. Take care. See you in 2020😄
Well that’s it from me for another flying year. 808hours of flying the
@Airbus
#A350
around the world. Thanks to everyone who has interacted on here, the fantastic crews I’ve had the pleasure of flying with, the laughs and the brilliant photos you’ve sent me. Merry Christmas 🎄🎅
Sorry I’ve been so quiet on here recently. BA pilots are being balloted on a deal regarding our future which may well result in around 270 pilots being made redundant. Hopefully it will be far fewer but it seems inevitable we will lose some very good people. Sad times indeed.
Back up in the skies! Haven’t had chance to post photos like this since March. Some fantastic views of The Alps on the way back from Dubai earlier on
@British_Airways
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBF and also the incredible
@RollsRoyce
#TrentXWB
engine. A brilliant engineering combination✈️
Looking forward to the day the engine covers come off these and we can get back to flying people all around the world in the best, quietest and most comfortable airliner in the world.

Hello from 39000 feet over the Atlantic! Just started my break so I’m taking the opportunity of using the onboard WiFi to post some photos of the beautiful sunrise we just saw as we crossed the Newfoundland coast. 2h30m rest then back for the last hour of the flight.

BA268
Day 2 in the
@British_Airways
@Airbus
#A350
simulator. Yesterday we learned how to fly the A350 with everything working. Today we learn how to fly it when things aren’t going as well! Expecting engine fires, failures, smoke, single engined flying etc. Should be fun! 😄👍🏻✈️
Awful news about
@flyethiopian
#ET302
Could we please remember we are talking about 157 people here and not speculate as to the cause of the accident? Unfortunately these events seem to bring out a whole host of ‘aviation experts’. Let the proper investigation find the cause.
This is one of my favourite diagrams which I often show to new members of our crew when we fly to Africa. Everyone knows how big Africa is don’t they? But do you REALLY know how big it is? Most maps tend to distort things. This is the true size and it never fails to amaze me.😄
This spectacular view is of the lights on the fishing boats off the coast of Phuket as seen from 34000 feet. I tried my best to capture it in a photograph but seeing it for real was amazing! In the distance is the setting moon, turning orange as it meets the horizon.
Memories of a couple of years ago when I was lucky enough to show the wonderful ‘Mother of Dragons”
@emiliaclarke
around the ‘Bridge’ of the A380. Emilia had just finished filming the final series of
@GameOfThrones
but wouldn’t tell me how it ended! She was lovely and friendly 😄
I’ve been promising this for a while, but I’m pleased to say today I can release the first of a series of videos filmed in the flight deck of our
@British_Airways
#A380
First film is of a landing into Johannesburg. Thanks to SFOs Jeremy and Phil. 😄✈️
The views of Greenland from 36000 feet yesterday were just spectacular! I never tire of flying over this amazing place.
#greenland
#viewfromtheflightdeck
What a contrast! My first airliner was the
@Boeing
737-200. Just look how much flight decks and instrumentation have evolved with the development of the
@Airbus
A350. The job is still pretty much the same. Houses still get smaller when you pull back on the controls. 😄✈️
Almost ready to leave Dubai as BA106 flying
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBH. Flight time 7h45m into some quite strong winds so staying at fairly low level initially, just 30000 feet. See you in the morning
@HeathrowAirport
I know times are hard and difficult decisions sometimes have to be made, but it is heartbreaking to hear about so many truly world class crew hanging up their wings at the moment. We are losing some real superstars. To each and every one of you, thank you for being brilliant.😄✈️
Just about ready to go on the BA105 to Dubai on
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBG (the one that did the simultaneous departure with Virgin a couple of days ago 😎). See you in the morning Dubai 😄☀️
Now we all know that very few people would ever call Her Late Majesty anything but Elizabeth but this was a lovely touch by the
@RoyalAirForce
to use this registration aircraft for her final flight. 😄✈️
Thanks to Jerry and the
@BigJetTVLIVE
team for capturing our arrival from Accra to a rather windy
@HeathrowAirport
this morning. Jerry, you are absolutely right! In windy weather like this morning we just make sure we get the aircraft down safely. Next time can you turn the wind…
These are the kinds of views out of the flight deck window that I love. Flying just above the clouds, popping quickly through thin layers. This was taken during our climb out of Bengaluru earlier.

Sorry! This post ended up being so long I had to do it via screenshots 🙈 However, before I post more about my move to the A350 fleet I wanted to say some things about our industry, the effect
#COVID19
has had and why I’m going to continue on here and Instagram.
Some people say the
#A380
isn’t very efficient. Here are some numbers.. An A380 uses about 125-130t of fuel to fly LHR-LAX. A 787-9 uses about 55-60t. A380 carries 469 passengers and 787-9 carries 216. So both use approx 0.28t of fuel per passenger, and the A380 is nicer!😄
I think tomorrow I may do a simulated flight from home...
I thought I’d sit in my chair in front of the TV for about 12 hours, only stand up to go to the loo & hope one of the children checks on me every 30 minutes to make sure I’m ok and see if I want anything to eat or drink 😄
Well it had to happen eventually! Tonight
@Vanillapilotlhr
and I will be flying together in a real aircraft for the first time 😄✈️ We are taking
@Airbus
A350-1000 G-XWBC to São Paulo as BA247. Long flight time of 11h35m. Lots of time to chat 😄 See you in the morning Brazil.
Ever wanted to know what it looks like from the flight deck of an
#A380
during takeoff? Here we are setting off for Johannesburg on “The Princess” G-XLEA as
@British_Airways
BA55K. The same flight I will be on later today. Hope you enjoy the view. 😄✈️
I’ve said before the
#A380
fuel system is quite complex. Last night we had a faulty fuel pump which meant our automatic system needed some manual help😄 Here you can see us manually balancing the fuel using crossfeed valves and turning some pumps off. Make sense?😄👍🏻✈️
This is diabolical! How on earth can this have been allowed to happen? If ever you were looking for a reason to book flights with an airline who’s pilots you can trust, here it is. We work so hard to maintain our standards. Annoying to all genuine pilots.
We had a lovely view over The Alps as we flew to Dubai earlier. Timelapse video as we routed east of Mont Blanc then almost directly over The Matterhorn (slightly left of centre just before the right turn at the end).
What an office window!
#viewfromtheflightdeck
One more flight for me to do this year. I started the decade flying both the A320 on shorthaul & the A318 from
@LondonCityAir
to New York, moving to the A380 in 2014. But how many hours flying do you think I clocked up over the last 10 years? Closest answer gets an A350 key ring.
Called out off reserve as the third pilot on a São Paulo trip, so not my usual view during the flight deck setup…. Then treated to a beautiful sunrise over Brazil. 😄✈️
My view from the P3 seat of our
@Airbus
#A350
during the descent into
@HeathrowAirport
over the south coast of England this morning. This was from just over 20000 feet. We had a gorgeous view 😄✈️
So the standby desk called and I’m on my way to São Paulo. Flying
@Airbus
#A350
G-XWBI Princess Isabella this evening. 11 hour flight time as BA247. The great thing is we will be in Brazil for their match against Croatia later in the week. I’m guessing the atmosphere will be fab!
Please please all press and media outlets, when discussing something such as the engine failure on the
@united
777 yesterday could you run your thoughts past someone who knows what they are talking about. By that I mean a real life pilot, not unqualified an aviation analyst!🙈
17 years ago. Phone rings. No “Hello Dave”, just “Turn the TV on!”. I watched the second aircraft hit the WTC. Today we remember the 3000 killed,the 6000 injured,the amazingly brave emergency services and the innumerable people who’s lives were affected forever.
