If this all sounds familiar, it is. You have seen much of it before. But Extreme Prejudice is such a blast. The direction is stylish, the performances are strong, and the violence is Peckinpah-like.

There is an elite unit of ex-soldiers after Boothe as well. These veterans of conflicts in Vietnam, Angola, and Lebanon are led by Michael Ironside, backed by the CIA, and are not unlike the outlaws in The Wild Bunch.

In a private meet-up, early in the story, Nolte gives Boothe the chance to surrender to him. Boothe refuses. So you know there is going to be a killing later in the film. Who dies is never in doubt. The thrill is watching how and when it happens.

Nolte and Booth used to be best friends growing up. They did everything together: - Smoked weed. - Got drunk. - Dated the same girls. Now, they are sworn enemies.

These macho men are out to arrest Powers Boothe, a sleazy drug lord operating with impunity across the border in Mexico.

He plays a tough and uncompromising Texas Ranger busting dope peddlers on the USA-Mexico border. His long-suffering partner is the passionate singer, Maria Conchita Alonso. Rip Torn is his wise old boss, handy with a shotgun.

As a Walter Hill film, you can expect Extreme Prejudice to be taut and terrific. The picture is a 1987 release, and its energy still excites you now, just as it did back then. Extreme Prejudice is waffle-free and only 104 minutes long. The star is Nick Nolte.
