Another participant reported on the tragic Mokwa floods in Niger State. Over 200 lives were lost, and more than 3,000 people were displaced. Poor infrastructure worsened the damage. 🔗

Two reporters covered the fight against oil theft. The Navy’s FOB Bonny shut down illegal refining sites and recovered over 22,000 litres of stolen crude. 🔗 🔗

Another focused on Nigeria’s forest crisis. Deforestation, biodiversity loss, and poor enforcement are threatening ecosystems and slowing climate progress. 🔗

A participant spotlighted Jigawa’s desertification crisis and how rising heat, poor rainfall, and overgrazing are destroying farmlands and deepening poverty. 🔗

Another highlighted aspect of Nigeria’s flood response cycle is the focus on quick relief rather than long-term solutions. Blocked drains and heavy rains lead to repeated disasters. 🔗

One journalist explored how Abuja’s growth is choking its air. Traffic fumes, burning waste, and Harmattan dust now fill the skies, while climate policies remain weak. 🔗

Since the training, participants have published powerful stories using data to spotlight Nigeria’s climate challenges. From air quality to desertification, these reports are calling attention to urgent issues.

What we saw wasn’t just interest. It was readiness. Students, journalists, advocates, and researchers are eager to use data to tell better stories, push for stronger policies, and make smarter decisions.

Following the successful completion of our multi-campus tour across six Nigerian universities, one thing is clear: the demand for data literacy is growing, and so is the need for the right kind of training.

This tour is a major step in Dataphyte Academy’s mission to train data-driven journalists, researchers, and policy advocates. We thank every university and participant who helped to make it a success.

We were inspired by the high level of engagement from students and staff. Their curiosity and critical thinking reflected a clear and growing demand for data literacy in journalism and policy advocacy.

Leading the tour was @Prof_KennyJames , Academy Coordinator and Data Trainer at Dataphyte. His leadership made every session insightful and impactful. He was joined by Yusuf Ibrahim, who provided technical support, and Jemima John-Udhe, assisting with training and documentation.

We visited: @UnilorinNGR, @uniosune, @OAUniversity, @realLasustech, @aauainfo, and @officialFUOYE. At each campus, we held sessions on data journalism for accountability and transparency. Participants learned how fact-based reporting supports civic engagement and drives policy.
