Listening to Ira Steven Behr talk about "Deep Space Nine", and how he responded to the vocal fan outrage over "In the Pale Moonlight" for betraying "Star Trek."
He responded by telling his writing staff, "Then every episode should be like that!"
I really do love Behr. The best showrunner "Star Trek" ever had, with respect to Piller and Coon.
The fans' reaction to the moral complexity of "In the Pale Moonlight" made Behr worried about the state of the franchise.
He worried it was effectively "children's television."
It feels like it would be impossible to make something like "Deep Space Nine" in a major franchise today. ("Andor" is close, but that was an accident.)
It's reassuring to know that Behr saw that side of fandom while running "Deep Space Nine", and had the right reaction.

In the Pale Moonlight was π€πΌπ₯! One of my all time favourite DS9 episodes too. Honestly, if we could have Ira (and Terry Matalas) running Trek shows right now, it would be insane.
@Darren_Mooney
I agree in 99%, except that Andor was an accident.
Andor was conceptualized as a serious show from day one of its production while DS9 had to develop itself through 2 seasons into serious war drama.
@StevanGucu
You can disagree, but it's a matter of fact.
Disney rejected the pitch, and only accepted it after their alternative version fell apart and they needed to put something in front of the camera.
If Disney had their way, it would never have happened.
@joshbernhard
"I said, βThis is the show you should do.β I sent it to Kathy and it was like, OK, well, weβre not doing that. They tried another [approach]. When that fell apart, they read this memo over again and ... what seemed insane ... was starting to look good."
@Darren_Mooney
I'm really curious to check out DS9. The only Trek I've genuinely liked so far is Wrath of Khan. Couldn't get into TOS or TNG, maybe this could be the one that cracks it for me. The one that gets people mad lol.

@Darren_Mooney
how could anyone be mad at this episode. It was one of the best of the series and loved the framing device with it being a captain's log. It showed us that even the best Starfleet officers can be flawed and sometime we have to do evil things in order to save more lives.
@Darren_Mooney
Deep Space Nine was probably the best written of all the Star Trek series, and it pretty much peaked at that episode. It's kind of been downhill since then.
@Darren_Mooney
In The Pale Moonlight is one of my top fave episodes. What's not to love? Siskos moral conflict of doing the
wrong thing to get the right results. Gareks moral ambiguity leading the charge.
It's Trek perfection.
@Darren_Mooney
I just rewatched this episode! I'm so surprised people didn't like it. I thought it was brilliant. Makes me want to seek out Avery Brooks' Shakespeare performances.
