Why can't Ireland have proactive solutions?. 1. Allow pharmacist substitutions within defined protocols.2. Give temporary GMS codes to essential products when no coded products are available. What are we waiting for, the UK to show us what to do?.@roinnslainte @DonnellyStephen.

(6/6).The example here is with a discontinued medicine but the same issue arises on a daily basis with medication shortages. It has been highlighted repeatedly but no one wants to acknowledge or deal with the problem so patient's continue to suffer, simply due to inaction.

(5/6) Despite the reasonable logic in switching brands, pharmacies interchanging medicines in this way are considered to be committing an act of fraud in the opinion of the @HSELive. We can't claim for anything other than the coded item. @CcoHse @roinnslainte @DonnellyStephen.

(4/6).Cost difference between Lyrinel and unlicensed version is €2. Many pharmacies will see the injustice and give GMS patients the unlicensed medicine but claim the lower cost of Lyrinel from the HSE. The pharmacy bears the difference in cost; often it's much greater than €2.

(3/6).For DPS patients (paying €80 per month), it’s likely if we use an unlicensed code for this unlicensed item, the HSE will pay for it – so no extra charge for these patients. Also, none of inconvenience of changing medicines. A completely unequitable situation.

(2/6). for the unlicensed medicine or go back to their GP for them to prescribe an alternative medicine which does have a code. Given how busy GPs are this process could take weeks, also the alternative may not work as well for the patient. @FergalBowers @NewstalkFM.

1/6 Example of daily issue in Irish pharmacy:. Lyrinel (incontinence) was discontinued.Alternative not licensed in Ireland. HSE haven’t given a code for alternative so we can’t give it to our medical card patients. Therefore, the patient must pay €50.@deshocks @davidcullinane

Currently no kids' amoxicillin liquid (antibiotic) or soluble prednisolone (steroid) available to order in Irish pharmacies. Any chance the @roinnslainte will take action on the ongoing medication shortage issue?. @deshocks @FergalBowers @DonnellyStephen.

We should remove scanning from the dispensing process but still verify all medicines coming into the pharmacy to ensure patients are protected against falsified medicines. This is the safest option for the patient and there is no logical reason not to make this change.

FMD scanning during the dispensing process creates a patient safety risk, pharmacists nationwide agree. This is a real risk, the risk of a falsified medical is essentially zero.
