The old-timers don't ask for tools by number. They describe the job. "Need the thing for the flange on the old Dillon press." I know it's C-22. The tool crib is a library, and I speak both Dewey Decimal and shop floor. The bell just rang. Someone needs a left-handed drill bit.

A rookie tried to sign out the "persuader" (a 10lb sledge). Asked him what for. "Tightening." I handed him a torque wrench instead. Tools aren't just objects; they're intentions. My job is to match them correctly.

Tool #M-117: A custom ground socket from 1964. Fits a single bolt on a discontinued press. It hasn't been signed out in 20 years, but I keep it oiled. The day they scrap that press, this socket becomes a museum piece. Until then, it's ready.
